By now I hope you’ve heard that ATH Records has teamed up with Big Bill to curate the excellent Slack Capital Compilation! We put the digital version out last week, but tonight at Austin’s Barracuda, we’ll be celebrating the physical release! Buy your way in, you get a copy of the CD, with proceeds going to Anthropos Arts…a foundation helping underprivileged youth get lessons in music. It means a lot to me personally to be part of this…on both the musical front and the charity front. You love Austin music? This is where to be tonight! Doors open at 8 PM.
Here’s the line-up:

There’s been great coverage this week for Austin’s Big Bill…local blog Ovrld and national mag, The Big Takeover added to the band’s recent press run. It’s deserved on so many levels, not only just musically, but in its representation of what truly makes Austin “weird.” Our label is releasing the 7″ today, and it will come with a special prize for those of you that order it HERE (it’s like a musical Cracker Jacks!), but you should also come out to End of an Ear on Sunday evening before the Oscars to enjoy a great set celebrating the band’s release. They’ll go on at 5 PM, and we’ll have the 7″ on hand for you to grab. Trust me, this is going to be a great year for all things Bill…so get a head start with this 7″.

Ever since we started working with Big Bill, I’ve really been paying closer attention to the message a lot of the acts are putting out into the world. The story from Hit Bargain spins the story of 80s classic Die Hard into an attack on a world of police and gun violence. I like the spastic call-and-response attitude that’s delivered, giving the song a huge punch, or the listener rather. The group will be self-releasing the Hit Bargain EP, hoping to get you hip to the world around you. I miss important music.

Last week the ATH Records label was fortunate enough to get a lot of love for our newest release from Big Billover at Impose (you can read the article HERE). There was a discussion on taking on modern gender roles, as well as the band’s penchant for making art/music on their own terms, no matter the cost. Still, it’s important to give the song more love, especially considering it’s a fine piece of punk rock, bred on the history of our fair city and it’s changing landscape. The guitar shuffles perfectly as the cymbals crash in your ear, and Eric Bill delivers his vocals in his distinctive style. We’ll be celebrating the release of the 7″ at End of an Ear on February 28th.
You can also order it HERE if you’re not fortunate enough to live within traveling distance to the local record shop!

My turn for giving Free Week a little love.
Night one with camera was a solid lineup at The Mohawk to celebrate our friend’s birthday. Pooneh is kind of a big deal in music photography and a damn nice person to boot. I was at the show and bought her a beer when she turned twenty-one five long years ago. Heh. But here we were with an excuse as good as any to have a solid lineup of bands with a huge amount of variation in genres. Featured and immortalized by the camera’s Shivery Shakes, Big Bill, Unknown Relatives, Milezo and Night Drive.
We persevered against the drizzly evening for a crisp night. Click through, please.
We’re about to move forward to a new year, so I wanted to take a brief look back at our ATH Records releases in 2015, and give you a hint at what’s coming your way from us in 2016. We only had a few releases in 2015 (3), but we’ve already got four on the slates for 2016, so let’s look back and hint at what’s next. I threw in some songs so you could see/hear what we’ve been doing. Make sure to go like the bands on FB (it’s sad that it helps) and if you’re inclined, you can like our FB Page too. Read more
It’s a really good weekend for shows, and it’s good to see the scene heating back up after the Winter seasonings. Friday night is sure to be the highlight of the weekend, but look to some other rad shows you can attend about town. These are just a few of my suggestions, so if you’re not feeling what I’m into, feel free to look up your own gig to attend. Also…it’s clear Leon Bridges is blowing up. Read more
Who in Austin isn’t on the Big Bill train? You? What are you waiting for? New tunes? Well, congrats friends, the local Austin rockers have completed their new release, titled The Second Bill, and it’s all yours for the jamming today. I’ve loved the group’s live performances for some time, and I feel that you can sense the energy of those shows in the songs you’ll hear streaming below; there’s garage guitar stabs and a rambunctious quality that have won the hearts of Austin show-goers (and beyond) for some time. Sit back and rock out, then go pick the EP from the group. I recommend “I Wanna Do Evil.”
It’s Friday, and you need something to do. You’re in Austin, looking for a great show. Problem solved, you should be at Cheer Up Charlies for the anticipated release of Alex Napping‘s debut LP, courtesy of Punctum Records. It’d be easy to just say, go see Alex Cohen play; she and the band are great. And that’s very true. But, in order to draw a solid crowd, you’ve got to have some great opening acts, like Big Bill, Soft Swells and Lowin. Big Bill‘s oddball garage rock never fails to impress. Soft Swells are on the trustworthy label, Modern Outsider (local label!). Lowin, well, let’s just say this is one of the next big things to get out of Austin. Solid bill from start to finish. Get there at 8 in time for things to kick off!

It’s difficult to tour nowadays, unless you’ve got a pocket of change in your pocket to help carry you on your way. So, with that, I suggest you go and throw all your money at one of Austin’s great acts, Big Bill. They just put on a great set with us over at Mohawk on Sunday, and tonight will be your last chance to catch them for several months. It might, and I stress might, also be one of the last times you get to see Mirror Travel, if the rumor mill is correct….which will be an extremely sad day. Plus, Daniel Francis Doyle & the Dreams, along with the Eternal Dyad Dance Crew will be starting things off the right way. The show starts at 9 PM over at Holy Mountain, so get there early to enjoy some cheap libations and get yourself in the mood for some great tunes.
