Do512 did a good thing and hired a friend of the program. Formerly at Emo’s, Ross is good people and he was nice enough to invite me and the cameras over to one of the live sessions they have at the offices. This sessions artists were Riverboat Gamblers and then one of my personal favorites Black Joe Lewis. To see both in a tiny room, bonus.

I can already see the look on your face when you press play on this new Black Joe Lewis track. You’re confused, reading the artist name again, and scratching your head as to how this could be the same Black Joe we all know and love. I’m right there with you, but I also said to myself, yeah this is sort of badass. Everyone is entitled to change their sound and I see this as being a very positive thing for the group. You can only get so far in this town continuing to play bluesy/gospel style music. I’m with you Joe. That bass line is just downright disgusting.
New album Electric Slave is due out August 13th on Vagrant Records. Per the album title, I’d say be ready for some loud, in your face rock music.
We thought about this long and hard, thinking over our favorite releases from bands located in Austin over the last year. Blood was spilled, jabs were thrown, but overall, we feel like we got our hands around the best releases that we feel epitomized the Austin scene in 2009. Don’t forget, we’re particular to our tastes, so while you may disagree, we reserve the right to stand by these ten acts and their albums from 09′. Follow the jump for full list.
Shortly after our time at ACL, we realized that we failed to interview any of our favorite local acts playing over the weekend. To make up for our miscue, we caught up with up and coming Austin artist Black Joe Lewis via email. Black Joe has been hard working hard and touring the country with his band The Honeybears after releasing his debut LP earlier this year. Follow the jump to read full interview.
Thank you Hole in the Wall for continuing to put on awesome shows for cheap cheap money! So if your Saturday plans are looking bleak, take a little trip down I-35 to San Marcos for the KTSW sponsored Mr. Fest this weekend. The event is going to be a big one and we won’t even attempt to list all the goings on in this tiny little space so we’ll hit the key points. For starters, this event will start at 11am, run all day long and end around 1am. All sorts of local bands will be playing at the festival including a headlining night show by one of our favorites Black Joe Lewis. Even better news, our friends Whitman & Built by Snow will be playing hour long sets right before Black Joe on the Bar 141 stage. All of downtown is included with 5 venues setting up stages for live music. Not just a music event, food, drink and games will also be part of the fun. Best of all, this thing is totally free! For more information, head to the KTSW website, see show info on Do512 or check out that fancy flier. This should be one festival you won’t want to miss.

Is anyone else just a little bit sad today as we wrap up another amazing SXSW Festival in Austin? I know we here at ATH are as depressed as anyone to head back into the real world today. Gone are the carefree days of roaming around downtown in search of the best music and the best parties with free red bull and vodka. While still nursing our hangovers and mending our bruises, we would like to share with you the best live acts that we caught this past week. You may have heard of most of these bands or they may be completely new to you, but regardless, these bands brought the noise at SXSW. We tried to be fair and pick the acts that either lived up to a certain hype or just rocked our faces to the floor. Follow the jump for our top 10 live acts of SXSW.
Daytrotter brings us another great set this week with Austin’s own Black Joe Lewis. Mr. Lewis and the gang play 5 songs in the studio including unreleased song “Snatch It Back And Hold It”. Download/Stream all the songs now. Long live Black Joe!

Austin’s favorite son, Black Joe Lewis, is playing at The Continental Club on Thursday evening. Black Joe is well known around town for bringing intensity and fire to his live performances that other local acts can’t compete with. Mr. Lewis is set to go on at midnight with tickets only $10 at the door. Gunpowder!
