SXSW Awards – 2018

Your friendly neighborhood ATH staff members have emerged from SXSW week and I think we’re all finally ready to reminiscence on what transpired. As we’ve done in the past, it seems like a perfect time to hand out some awards for the festival with superlatives that we made up like 5 minutes ago. Keep in mind we saw a lot of bands, had a bit to drink, and ventured out to more venues than we can possibly remember. So buckle up, hit the jump and see who we deemed worthy and deserving of our very prestigious awards.

We’ll be out and about the rest of the week to view the things during SxSW so remember to check out the twitter and our various instagram accounts.

Either you missed the big Austin Town Hall vs. Side One Track One party, or perhaps you were there and want to relive it. Check out the gallery after the break that features faces, bands, instruments, lights, beverages, scenes and moods from the day and night at Hotel Vegas. Highlights for me were Glaze, Nite, El Lago, BLXPLTN, Tres Oui, Daphne Tunes and Marmalakes. Find these bands during SxSW. You’ll be happy if you do.

Announcing the ATH vs SOTO SXSW Party

Today’s the day you’ve all been waiting for, the announcement of our annual AustinTownHall vs Side One Track One SXSW party. We’re throwing down at Hotel Vegas/Volstead again, and we’ve booked a pretty solid lineup of acts. We’ve got some bands with huge buzz like Caroline Says or Why Bonnie, a handful of ATH Records artists…and we even got in a few out of town acts like Nite and El Lago. Best news of all? It’s absolutely free, so all you have to do is come on over and just enjoy yourselves…there’s something for everybody. Show kicks off at 2 PM and lasts all day and night. Plus, we love you, so you don’t even have to RSVP! Check out the event page, and plan ahead, you’ll be here all day!

Do You Know Catalina La O? She’s on Slack Capital 2

Slack Capital 2 is a compilation of music by 27 of the greatest bands in Austin. All proceeds from the comp go to SafePlace, which provides support for victims of domestic and sexual violence. We’re unveiling one song per day until the the release party on April 14.

Song of the day: Catalina La O — “Se Nos Rompio El Amor”

And now for something completely different. Catalina La O is the new project of Khattie Q, formerly of the politi-punk band BLXPLTN. If you got to see Catalina La O at Bill Ball 2 last fall, you were treated to something completely unexpected — a bracing display of powerhouse vocals, belted out over a paired-down rock band arrangement totally designed to spotlight the emotion of the song and the singer. Like wandering into David Lynch’s night club Silencio, it was at once beguiling and captivating.

“Se Nos Rompio El Amor” is an epic ballad first made famous by Spanish singer Rocio Jurado, and the band is fully dedicated to it. After a long instrumental intro, Khattie’s first whisper draws you into the emotional turmoil of the song. Soon she and the band reach great heights, draw things back down again, then explode into a finale that will leave you spent (the title of the song means “We broke love”). A truly powerful performance by a talent we’ll be keeping an eye on for a long time. — Eric Braden

PreOrder Slack Capital 2 HERE.

Release Show on April 14th at Barracuda!

ATX Spotlight: BLXPLTN Keep On Keepin’ On

BLXPLTN

Since this band keeps putting out track after track of solid music, I’m going to keep sharing them with you. If you haven’t already gotten to know these locals who are taking our music scene by force, there’s never been a better time to start as BLXPLTN have yet another afro-punk jam. “Auf Wiedersehen” is a spunky, yet superbly infectious track that will have you falling in love with the buzzy guitars while those growling vocals give the track its bite. I think this is my favorite track I’ve heard thus far from the band and I’m delighted to share it with you. Get behind these locals, as they’re so obviously on their path to the big leagues.

BLXPLTN Hit It Hard Again

AFROPUNK Festival - Day 1Near the end of last year, things started to really take off for local afropunkers BLXPLTN with their release of their debut LP, Black Cop Down. It gives me great pleasure to share with you yet another track by this trio, one that has a whole lot of fire behind it. “No Fly List, ” is a brand spanking new song that continues to grow my love affair with this band. Have a listen and enjoy this new song from a local band you need to know about if you haven’t already so you can look to catch them around SXSW.

Go to Andrew Fest (12.19 & 12.20)

andrewAndrew Collins has been a musician in the Austin scene for some time, most recently playing with LAX.  Unfortunately, tragedy struck Andrew earlier this year, leaving him with some expensive  bills to pay.  But, like Austin does, the community has banded together to throw Andrew Fest, a two-day benefit featuring great acts like Sip Sip, Wild Child and BLXPLTN.  They’re even bringing some of Andrew’s old friends out of the woodworks to reunite for the cause, namely Visitors and The Rise.  You can grab tickets HERE, and all the funds go to support the cause.  Plus, there will be lots of prizes and raffles courtesy of tons of great local folks.  If you can’t make it, consider helping out by donating HERE.
