Last Week’s Jams, Today (5.31 – 6.3)

Man, even in a short week, I managed to cover a whole lot of ground that we should remind you ran last week on ye’ ole site. Clocking in at just under an hour, you get a reminder to check out Team Play‘s debut LP, or maybe jump on the Onyon bandwagon with the rest of us now that Trouble in Mind have reissued their rad debut. Maybe you just want tried and true, like a new Florist tune or a Slow Magic remix for Letting Up Despite Great Faults. Pick your poison…it’s probably in here. Paris. Yeah.

BOAT Ready No Plans to Stick the Landing

Not sure what I’m more excited about…a new BOAT LP, or all the incredible folks who helped the band complete the song during the pandemic. You’ve got members of the Feelies, LAKE, Math/Physics Club, Kevin Hairs and Crystal Furs to name a few, so you know the songs will live up to quality expectations…so suffice to say, I’m stoked for both. My basic ears hear hints of early Fountains of Wayne, filling this song in with huge hooks that explode in unison with distorted guitar fuzz; the vocals seem to hang in the air just long enough to burrow into your brain like the best earworms. The opening single rips, and the No Plans to Stick the Landing LP will be out on June 24th via Magic Marker Records.

BOAT Share Loneliness Kills Video

I’m not sure if you’ve been on the ball and grabbed the Tread Lightly album from BOAT as of yet, but in case, I feel like this song might push you over the edge. Like all things during this pandemic, the video represents the lives of the band members under isolation, which, oddly, ties into the thematic element of the track. But, if I had one track to offer you from this record, I think this would be the one you’d love the most! From the cruising guitars to the way the vocals rise and soar in the verses; this is what it would sound like if the Beach Boys were super into pushing out power-pop hits for the masses. If you dig, the album’s available from Magic Marker Records today!

BOAT Share Metabolism

The latest single from BOAT is like a sweet little candy treat; you unwrap it and in an instant its gone, leaving you wanting another. The first 40 seconds or so are almost just like a wrapper, a vocal and a few heavy piano chords; peel it back and pop that in your mouth! Once you do, right at the 41 second mark, the tune kicks in and the sweetness of pop sensibility fully kicks in to gear. Honestly, that soaring vocal and the drums dropping in are just he sugary sweetness I need, or crave. I live for little pop moments just like that, making this track the perfect treat for you all. Their new album Tread Lightly will be out on May 1st.

BOAT Announce Tread Lightly

Forget Mondays. Tuesdays are the real struggle. The good news is I’ve got this nice little pop rocker from Seattle’s BOAT to get your day started. I love the way the band sets the tune up, toying with a softer side of indie rock in the opening moments before bounding down the road into the cheerful realms of hook-laden pop. There’s a slightly rough edge to the vocals in the chorus, cut up by a backing vocal that layers a nice softness just underneath. This tune appears on the group’s new LP, Tread Lightly, which is scheduled for release on May 1st; you can pre-order it HERE.

Premiere: Unlikely Friends Announce Crooked Numbers

Unlikely Friends are a pop group; they first came to my attention because of Charles Bert’s participation (he also plays in Math and Physics Club…D Crane from BOAT is the other core member). Today we’re excited to bring you this fresh single from the group’s forthcoming LP, Crooked Numbers. It opens with this distorted guitar, moving into a slight static vocal before pulling back the effects to reveal the song’s pop underbelly. You’re intoxicated, sure, but you’re not fully hooked until the falling melodies of the chorus are dropped on you; it’s like a sugar cube for pop aficionados. You’ll come back time and time again, and as you do, you’ll hear more vocal melodies surfing through the song, taking you on one hell of a pop rollercoaster. Crooked Numbers will be released on January 12th via Swoon Records.

Check Out Unlikely Friends!!!

a2084579216_2I came across the band while looking into the current status of Math and Physics Club (one of my faves).  Unlikely Friends is a band made up of its members, as well as those of BOAT, specializing in hook-laden indie rock.  There’s a bit more distortion than one would expect, but you can still hear the jangle ring of the guitars, as well as the warm tones of the vocal delivery…so I’m hooked.  Solid Gold Cowboys, the band’s new album, will be out this week courtesy of Jigsaw Records.
