+/- Announce Further Afield LP

It’s been a few years since we last heard from +/-, so excited to see that they’ve got a new record on the horizon for the end of May. I easily got caught up in that weird distant spring sound, then fell in love when the drums started snapping at the pace. When the vocals come in, riding the up and down of tones, I found myself diving right into the track. Still, they weren’t done, throwing in an energetic bit of jangling guitars to flesh out the sound; it’s crazy how a song can sound so full and employ such sparse sonics simultaneously…then again, that’s the mastery of the craft. Further Afield is out on May 31st via Ernest Jenning Record Co.

Pleased to Meet You: Corner Suns

cornersonsI’ve been fans of Corner Suns previous acts, so I’ll happily dig on what the duo of Brandon Carr (the Earlies) and John Dufilho (Apples in Stereo) offer with this new adventure. Our first listen has this brooding bit of experimental pop, opening with a darkened guitar line and a tinkering piano as the vocals echo in from the distance. There’s definitely a hint of psychedelia too, which isn’t a bad thing, especially as they bring in the pop underbelly throughout. Both these guys were involved incredible bands, so hearing this, I expect nothing but the best when they release their self-titled debut on January 13th.

Haunting Tune from Far-Out Fangtooth

farOkay, so perhaps haunting isn’t the precise word I’m looking for here; I think maybe erie might fit just as well, if not better.  Far-Out Fangtooth are typically known for their blistering psych leaning rock, but this tune has this ghostly vocal that is reminiscent of a band of demonic monks offering up a distant melody.  Of course, underlying that fact are the multiple layers and sonic changes in this tune, creating this captivating number that spans just under five minutes.  The group will be releasing Borrowed Time on October 29th via Slitbreeze.

Punk Rock from Parquet Courts

I feel like it has been awhile since I’ve posted a good punk rock jam, but luckily today, I got ahold of Parquet Courts latest album, Light Up Gold.  The band has roots in Texas, although they currently operate out of New York, so it only seems natural that I’d gravitate towards their sound.  On this effort, they’ve got the production down, which has really made way for the songwriting to reach the listeners.  Those of you interested in the period where punk merged into post-punk will find yourself happy, as the grooves definitely are pogo worthy, and the vocal delivery is spot on.  Happy to support these guys; you can grab their record from Dull Tools.
