Old Fashioned Bleeding Hearts Share Head North

I’ve been sitting on this song from Old Fashioned Bleeding Hearts for a few weeks now, waiting to share it, and it feels like the perfect way to start off a Friday…the last Bandcamp Friday of the year! In the first minute or so, you get this soft pop vibe, perfect for cruising through immense landscapes and “heading North.” At the 1:30 mark, there’s a twist, a jump up if you will, just a brief moment in time for the duo to employ some really strong hooks that soar, blowing through the song like the breeze when your windows are down. This is definitely one of those songs that just stays with you all day long.

Brooklyn seems to be the hotspot of the day, with that Fixtures tune earlier and now a brand new tune from Gustaf; their Mine 7″ drops this Friday via Royal Mountain. This tune here is the B-Side to that release, and draws on that sort of arty post-punk style, though I love how they never shy away from a little nod to a nice hook. There’s always this sense of playfulness, even when the band attack modern desires as constructs of our own design…or at least that’s my interpretation anyways. Plus, the video tosses in just enough fun that you can tell the band would be one hell of a live show…if that was a thing. Check the vid!

Fixtures Share Jay’s Riff

All those cool kid year end lists are out, but there’s still great music to be had in 2020; the new Weak Automatic EP from Brooklyn’s Fixtures is one such release that’s landed on my radar for this Friday. This short new ditty before Friday’s release should tip the scale in the band’s favor; it employs a nice little riff that rocks right through, on the corner of Jangle Street and Fuzz Road. Still, the band have some playful little harmonies working through their jams that maximize the endearing quality they bring to the musical table. You might even find just a hint of a toe tap in there too. Weak Automatic is out Friday via Bobo Integral.

Fixtures Share Great New Single from Weak Automatic EP

Brooklyn’s Fixtures are not content to just offer us simple little pop nuggets, at least not if we aim to digest their great new single off the forthcoming Weak Automatic EP. For me, it’s this swirling mixture of all sorts of influences worn right out there on their sleeves. At times, the vocals give the song that hip nod of cool popularized by Lou Reed. But, there’s also this propulsive nature that courses through the tune, somewhere in between krautrock and Broken Social Scene; it feels like the kind of tune that could built to a mass explosion of sweat and euphoria in the live setting. This tune should catch a lot of ears, and if those ears belong to you, be sure to check in on Weak Automatic, released via Bobo Integral on December 4th.

Have Another Cut Worms Tune

In case you missed it somehow, Max Clarke has a giant new double album coming out on October 9th via his Cut Worms moniker. Several tunes have already been dropped from the upcoming LP, but I am finding myself particularly drawn to this new one called “Every Once in a While”. It features the always engaging, almost Buddy Holly style vocal delivery of Clarke along with an expertly crafted, and beautifully recorded singer/songwriter track. Clarke is an expert at toeing that line between true country and a more Americana, songwriter style.

The new Cut Worms double LP, Nobody Lives Here Anymore, is due out on October 9th via JagJaguwar.

SXSW Interview: The Muckers

We’re continually drawing ever near to the SXSW music festival and the ATH crew is very ready for the music and a break from work. It’s fun finding some new bands prior to the festival, and Brooklyn based outfit The Muckers is just one of those bands. They sort of have a White Reaper meets more glam-y T. Rex type of sound. Jose Junior Shares Samantha

When I heard this Jose Junior tune, I felt like I could immediately place it in my brain. It had that wistful sense you got from Hamilton of the Walkmen; it’s the sort of voice that takes you for a long ride that you’re happy to be on. The more you listen, the more Jose’s influences like the Brian Jonestown and Devendra Banhart start to unfold, particularly in the songwriting craft of Banhart. It’s a definite song, with an underlying note about stepping up into adulthood, whether you’re ready or not. He’s fairly new on the scene, so maybe this track will pique your interest.

Beautiful Track From Wilsen

It’s been quite a few years since I last mentioned Brooklyn outfit Wilsen. Not sure where I’ve been, but the band just announced a new album today with accompanying new single/video “Ruiner”. It’s a bit of a haunting, broody, dream pop number which will at times offer joy, and then slow things down to soften the mood. I love the slower bits, paired with the more intense, louder moments. Wonderful work.

Wilsen will release new album Rainer on February 21st via Secret City Records. Pre-order

Boyfriend Genes Share Best Friend

It’s interesting how your mood impacts your listening choices, or perhaps the other way around, but whatever the case, this morning’s got me sort of floating along in this little dreamy pop realm. This Boyfriend Genes tune is doing just the right trick too, offering up this thoughtful dream pop of sorts; the guitar notes sort of have that natural sense of longing that has you staring outside at the world…which, to me, is the perfect sense of Friday. As the song unfolds, there’s a slight little haze on the vocals, fogging up the window to the outside world we so desperately want to join…or at least us folks locked up inside four walls. Have an escape with this Brooklyn duo.
