Mo Troper Shares The Only Living Goy in New York

Maybe its entirely a stretch, but I feel like Mo Troper‘s latest album is likely going to put him in a sort of Daniel Johnston territory all by himself. On the first single from MTV, you got a little bit of that sort of link between his early work and where it seems like he’s heading on this collection. It’s not even the faint warble and distinctive delivery, but just the finer, whimsical details like the harmonica and faint percussion that really makes me feel like he’s crafting some of the more magical music to come out right now. I sincerely hope you’ll give it a listen, then be sure to pick up MTV on September 2nd via Lame-O.

Tape Deck Mountain Covers Daniel Johnston

tapedeckI rarely post covers; it’s just not really my thing, except in this case when it involves two of my favorite bands. I’ve been covering Tape Deck Mountain and their tunes for some time, and as an Austin music fan, it only seems logical that I love Daniel Johnston. TDM has taken a noisier approach to DJ hits “True Love Will Find You in the End” and “Devil Town,” giving them a completely different feeling. They’re doing a limited edition 7″ of the two songs, with all proceeds going to National Alliance on Mental Illness. Stream the two covers below.

New Music From Daniel Johnston

daniel-johnstonAustin icon Daniel Johnston is gearing up to release his first new material in quite some time and this time he’s had some help from friends in high places.  This new single “Freedom” will appear on upcoming album Is and Always Was due out October 6th via High Wire Music.  Johnston apparently worked closely with producer/musician Jason Falkner on the project and the outcome is some of the fullest and most well produced material we’ve ever heard from the singer/songwriter.

4/5 Clem Snide @ Mohawk

p40404161Eef Barzelay has resurrected himself; both in the studio and onstage. After a 2 year hiatus under the moniker Clem Snide, Barzelay (joined by fellow “vaudeville hoofers” Brendan Fitzpatrick on bass and Ben Martin on the drum kit) now ooze coolness.  After nearly two decades of a constantly rotating nucleus of band members ranging in sounds from post-punk to alt-country, Snide has outwardly got it right.  Follow the jump to continue reading our Clem Snide w/ Broken West at Mohawk show review.
