If you’re booking gigs with the likes of The Fall, Destruction Unit and Ceremony, you’ve got to be doing something right in my book, thus why I’ve caught onto Cardiff’s Chain of Flowers. Musically, you’re ears are surrounded by a huge wall of noise, with buzzsaw guitars grinding at the front of the mix. From the back of the club, however, you can hear the vocals echoing over a pounding rhythm section. The group is set to release their self-titled debut on October 16th via Alter, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that it lives up to the promise of the early singles.
This great new Destruction Unit tune is featured as one of the many singles from the Adult Swim Singles series, and while there’s been some hits, this is definitely my favorite. I just love the wall of noise the band constructs in practically every song, especially when various pieces of the group pick up the pace mid track…drumming and guitar in this case. You can look for other great singles coming from the series, with Diarrhea Planet and Speedy Ortiz already schedule for the next couple of weeks. The Chaos continues this evening with what might be my most anticipated show of the festival. I am of course speaking of The Men playing over at Red 7 this evening. Having seen the band several times in the live setting, I can attest to the fact that they will bring the pain and make your ear drums bleed (in a good way). Let’s not forget that the undercard is also loaded with Destruction Unit, Lust For Youth, Pharmakon, Marshstepper, and Bodies of Light all in tow to offer up support.[audio:http://austintownhall.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/06-Open-Your-Heart-1.mp3]

We knew what we were in for. We saw it coming. We ignored the warning signs. I was heading into my third night of shows in a row, fourth in five days. Things were escalating. Lower Dens -> Howard Jones -> Nada Surf -> The Men. After seeing their sets during SxSW, we knew we had to be at Red7 to see The Men. They made the 2012 top albums so far list, what kind of music-writer-types would we be if we passed up seeing one of our favorites?
I have been chewing on this review in my brain since the show and I think I have boiled down for you. Click through, thoughts and pics after the break…
