Efterklang Announce Windflowers LP

I’ll admit, it’s actually been some time since I actually thought of Efterklang, though I’ll also add that they crafted one of my all time favorite jams, so they’re never too far away! Just yesterday, they announced a new record, and of course, the band continue to push the way they approach pop music. This song feels like it employs heavy sample work, or at least loops, letting the rest of the project add in these little layers, whether that’s dual vocal harmonies, laser sounds or woodwind notes; they just let things build and build, allowing you to sort of jump in where you see fit, immersing yourself in their blend. Windflowers will be out in October via City Slang, so this is the perfect time for me to go revisit the old catalogue.

Striking Number from A Lily

A_Lily.1Perhaps one of the greatest things about my job, or hobby, or whatever, is that I get to open my email to incredible songs that I might not have heard otherwise.  This track from A Lily has been around for a bit now, and it’s just overwhelmingly beautiful.  It reminds me of the sort of work I’d expect from Efterklang, with this lush accompaniment creating a dense background that never seems too busy.  You add in these softly floating vocals, and you’ve got a hands-down winner that begs your time.  The band will release the Lupa EP this week; it will definitely be worth your time, whetting your appetite before the group release Roma, the next full-length.

Show Review: Efterklang @ Mohawk (3.6)

Danish powerhouse Efterklang had a difficult task when they came to town on Wednesday night, which was more or less, SXSW eve.  It’s hard to entice people to a show when their racked with anxiety about scheduling and/or hiding from the masses.  Sure, it wasn’t sold out, but all those in attendance were treated to a joyous evening set by the group.

Read on for our thoughts on the show, and photos from B. Gray.

Date Wednesday, March 6th
Location Mohawk
Doors 630 PM
Tickets $12 from Frontgate

We know that you all have your eyes on the prize.  Sure, SXSW is a few weeks away, but starting Wednesday night, we’re all going to be treated to a long week and a half of great music here in town.  Why not start things off with Efterklang?  The Danes have been crafting brilliant orchestral pop tunes for quite some time, and as a person who has caught their live set multilple times, I can attest that you won’t leave this show disappointed.  Oh, and if you need another reason to go, Nightlands are also on the bill.  Dave Hartley, who works by day in War on Drugs, has just released Oak Island, his personal bedroom recording project.  It’s got a broader, more extravagant, sonic pallette this time, so you’ll need to see him perform too.  Opening things up at 7:30 will be My Empty Phantom…from here on out there’s a rad show every night of the week, so if you’re skipping the hullabaloo, at least make it to this night of joy.

New Atmospheric Pop From Efterklang

I feel like the news of an upcoming album from Danish based outfit Efterklang flew completely under the radar of the ATH crew.  Hell I’ve got a promo copy of their new LP, yet haven’t posted anything by way of news or single.  Well this changes today with an MP3 of beautiful new number “Apples” which appears on the band’s new album Pirimida due out September 24th.  All this comes after surprising 2010 Magical Chairs that turned our ears toward this band.

New Music from All the Apparatus

Portland seems to attract music of the shanty sort, much like All the Apparatus.  The ensemble cast have just completed and released All the Apparatus, the self-titled album that will surely have you fawning.  An easy comparison would be to make a Decemberists association, but the heavier vocals give me a the feeling of a more complex Murder by Death.  It’s sort of like a folk-core version of Efterklang, but maybe that’s a stretch.  Regardless, the group makes sweeping music for sweeping your house, and for all those other times when you just want to listen to really great tunes.

New Track from Canon Blue

Our writer JWag turned me onto this great track, and I’ve been playing this track all morning long. Daniel James is the man behind the project Canon Blue, and he’s worked in the past with Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear (who seems to work with everyone). This time round, he’s been hanging with Efterklang, prepping the completion of his new record, Rumspringa.  It’s going to come out on August 16th on Temporary Residence, and you’re going to love the craftsmanship of the songs on this collection, both orchestrated carefully and maintaining a clever pop lineage.  Trust me, you’ll love this track.

A long time favorite of we ATH members Bowerbirds are stopping by in Austin again at the Mohawk this Friday night.  Fellow ATH favorites and creators of one of my songs of the year Efterklang are also coming into town with Bowerbirds.  Opening support for both bands will be provided by Brooklyn boys Buke & Gass.  Sure lots of things are going down this Friday in Austin, but this stacked lineup has to be in consideration.

New Music from Frederik Teige

Frederik Teige spends the majority of his days backing up Efterklang in the live setting. But, he’s just released a new single of his own, which shows a lot of incredible promise.  The tracks is called “What is New,” and it might surprise people who follow his main gig, mostly because it’s so straight ahead in its approach to pop goodness.  Somehow I keep thinking of David Bazan when listening. Give it a test, and tell us if you dig it.

Free EP from Efterklang (sort of)

In 2009, Efterklang was one of our band’s to keep an eye on in 2010, and they lived up to our expectations with their new album Magic Chairs.  Now we’ve got news that the Danes are releasing a free EP with their mutant band, SlaraffenKlang, made with friends Slaraffenland.  Some of the tunes on the five song EP are mash-ups, while some are just joyous jams for you to enjoy with your friends.  So instead of listening to those new Arcade Fire tracks (as they’re mediocre at best), take a listen to this killer ensemble group.  Get your copy of the free EP HERE.  You can also just enjoy this killer track from the Magic Chairs.
