It is Formula One weekend. Do not get scared and stay home; go out and party among the race fans. Put on a fake accent and pretend you are Dutch, yesh? Make some new friends for when you travel to Mexico, Brazil, Germany or the UK. Apologize about the weather as the last few races at COTA have been blessed by perfect sunshiny goodness.
Here is a quick rundown of the Rainey St. Bud Light stage headliners…
8:20 p.m. Elle King
9:45 p.m. Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue
7:00 p.m. Money Chicha
8:30 p.m. Ozomatli
10:30 p.m. Mayer Hawthorne
7:00 p.m. Holiday Mountain
8:30 p.m. A-Trak
10:30 p.m. Public Enemy
There is also a show at ACL Live for you willing to shell some jack to have an evening with Lionel Richie on Saturday and plenty more shows and offers tied to Fan Fest at venues you know and love; for instance Dan Falconberry at Mohawk or Gang of Four at The Parish on Friday. You’ll notice there is nothing planned for Sunday. If you get a Sunday F1 ticket, you can see Elton John post-race. They are using the Super Stage set up Metallica and Nicki Manaj had during the X Games. I’ll be there wearing big sunglasses.
We have the start of College Football. The Horns are taking on the golden domers. Not sure I have high hopes, so many freshman starters and that isn’t good unless you are Kentucky’s basketball team. F1 returns to the kingdom of speed, Monza. The Tifosi will get worked over by Mercedes power. I’ll put the outside shot on Williams to podium. Lewis bleached his head. What? Premier League has the weekend off for international play so at least Nathan and I aren’t dropping any points. USMNT plays Peru tonight. Can Altidore just go away? Not a fan, cause he’s not a finisher. #controversialsportstalk
This week’s lead-in for the weekend is a lovely synth from a band called Satchmode. Two dudes, Gabe Donnay and Adam Boukis, based out of LA. I don’t remember how I came across this, maybe a related artist play from one of our posts? Probably. They just released an EP called Afterglow. This is a shimmy inducing piece of fun about a break up. Juxtaposition.
Transmission took over COTA Fan Fest. The lineup went from electric violin and cheesy country to now having Joan Jett, Devotchka, De La Soul, Those Darlins’, Fishbone, Broncho, Black Joe Lewis and more. Not bad. The schedule has been posted and the best part is that it is FREE.
Put that on your schedules for Halloween fun on Formula One weekend. Don’t be skeered, it doesn’t get too crowded and most people I have met while out at the track for the race have been great, all of them in love with Austin. Also, if you want a free F1 primer, head to Alamo South Lamar tonight and next Wednesday for FREE screenings of Senna (a great documentary) and Rush (Ron Howard movie about the Lauda/Hunt rivalry), respectively.
