Kings of Convenience Share Fever

Twenty year old Nathan was very much still in an emo/pop punk lifestyle when he encountered Kings of Convenience; it was one of those bands that kind of had me turning a little softer in my tastes, taking up some of the other pop styles in the indie sphere and really getting lost. So, here they are with their first album in a decade, and not a lot has seemed to change…though admittedly, this one does have a more “adult” vibe to its craft. Their music has always been about the vocals and the melodies they share together, not to mention the intricate crossing of guitar lines. I’m still a big fan. Peace or Love is out June 18th.

Brand New Purling Hiss

purlingSome brands of music grow weary, especially the psychedelic blend of garage rock. That being said, there are remnants of that in this new Purling Hiss tune, though it’s spun in an entirely different manner, making it supremely refreshing. Guitars are heavy and crashing, but the vocal melody seems to look directly towards 90s Brit pop (particularly the brand Oasis made popular). It just goes to show that you’re still allowed to jam loud, but you can also do it with a little touch of pop sensibility. This song will appear on the band’s new album, High Bias, which is being released by Drag City on October 14th.

More New Jams from Night Panther

I’ve already written about Night Panther in the last month, but I’m excited to bring you yet another new track from the group that surfaced earlier today. It’s definitely a track with a different twist on the duo’s dance-ready swagger.  While there’s a hook that grabs you throughout the soon, it’s not nearly as in your face as their earlier single, “Snudge.” I like the way the vocals sort of take off, floating into the background as the pitch reaches extreme heights.  No word as of yet as to when these dudes plan to release a full-length, but I’ll keep you posted on that as we get more details.  For now, sit back and dig the vibe here.

Fuzzed Out Rocker from Sleepy Sun

For their last effort, Fever, Cali’s Sleepy Sun got us off rocking with their own brand of psychedelic stoner rock, however, they still gripped tightly to a sunny side of songwriting with songs like “Rigamaroo.”  Their new effort, Spine Hits, aims to be a different beast, at least upon this first few listens.  You can grab the album on April 10th via The End Records, but for now just take a little listen to the first single. My ears sort of feel like there’s a bit of Brit-pop hiding behind the fuzzier elements of rock here, but I’ll let you be the judge. Check it!
