I have this weird feeling that Bnnywill be high upon folks talking points list when their debut record finally drops; I’m already holding them in high esteem. I love the nakedness of this tune, just the solitude of the presentation is really striking, to me anyways. Not sure which feels lonelier, the vocals of Jess or that guitar, but either feels like its just hanging in isolation, waiting for our discovery. There’s also this very slight tonal change around the 1:10 mark that really made this song stick out in my mind, so if you’re looking for little flourishes to charm, check that brief moment. Everything will be out on August 20th via Fire Talk.

 

Packs Share Two Hands Video

I’ve been really high on the new Packs tunes; I love how Madeline Link seems to escape the trappings of super formulaic pop rock…at least in my mind, she’s not hitting the highlights like I’ve heard others do. For one, the guitar work here almost seems in demo form, the mix keeps it grounded, leaving listeners with the perfect slice of a pseudo-grunge riff; I can easily here the wrong person trying to blow up the volume there, but its softer side allows for Link’s voice to hold the whole of the song without much interference. Speaking of that voice, how are you not mesmerized by it? Has the perfect pitch and tone; I’m super stuck on it. Take the Cake will drop on May 21st via Fire Talk.

Slick New Single From Wombo

Louisville is not typically a location that comes to mind when considering slick new forms of indie/garage rock, but new artist Wombo hope to change your mindset about their hometown. Fresh new single “Dreamsickle” certainly offers a bright, and sometimes edgy, contrast to a location typically known for southern rock and country. No this tune has a fabulous guitar sound perfectly balanced between slightly distorted yet still clean, paired with a thumping beat provided by the bass and drums. It’s definitely worth a listen today.

Wombo will be releasing this track as part of a new EP entitled Keesh Mountain due out on May 28th via Fire Talk Records.

PACKS Drop Silvertongue + Announce Take the Cake

For many of us, “Silvertongue” is our first listen to PACKS, and what a way to start things off! It’s 3 minutes of fuzzy riffs and cooled vocals that announce the band as an act we should all have on our radar this year. Personally, I love the space the song gives to the guitar work, letting it ring out in various spots to keep the edge of the song there as singer Madeline Links lets her voice fade atop those riffs; it just gives the song more of a distinct feel, like it’s not being dialed in with a formula. My two cents anyways. Plus, better news is Take the Cake, the debut LP, will be out on May 21st via Fire Talk/Royal Mountain.

Dark Tea Share Deanna Video

With another self-titled Dark Tea album on the horizon, I’m putting my headphones on up loud and indulging in the musical journey that Gary Canino always seems to take us on. Luckily, the band are also doing it with a little nod to LA noir films, so you get both the visual journey and the musical journey. I totally love how this song walks this line between Malkmus and Woods, offering both nostalgic wordplay and present day musical tendencies, spooning with one another. This paints the picture of an album that’s begging for that complete immersion, so prepare yourself to get lost inside what’s in store; Dark Tea drops on April 30th via Fire Talk.

Mamalarky Announce Self-Titled LP

If you’ve had your eyes on Mamalarky, you might have noticed some bubbling tunes popping up this past year, hinting at their debut LP…and that time has finally been announced! Fire Talk will be releasing the self-titled LP on November 20th. With the news comes another single to tease the release, and it captures what I really enjoy about the band’s work. The playfulness in the video somehow always also seems to be part of the music too, balancing these exuberant notes with more serious approach; you can hear that in the anti-chorus moments going on here when Livvy’s voice sort of settles in more directly, kind of flattening out and making you take note. It’s like a fun rock party, and I’m totally here for it.

 

Dehd Share Month Video

Up until now, we’ve mostly been hearing the Dehd singles through the voice of Emily Kempf, but this round, we get to hear Jason Balla take the lead, so it offers a slightly different twist. You get about 15 seconds of his voice hanging out in the air alone. Suddenly, the rhythm section drops in and speeds up the song’s energy; the churning guitars still have that crispness you’ve by now begun to associate with the band. Balla’s performance doesn’t differ too much from Kempf’s, other than perhaps tone; they both have this knack for holding their notes and sort of draping them on top of the energetic propulsion of the band’s sound, working to provide that perfect contrast. Flower of Devotion is out next week via Fire Talk.

One More From Deeper

At this point we’ve said just about all we can say about Chicago quartet Deeper and their upcoming album Auto-Pain. A quick search will show you we’ve been covering the band since their very first single release back in 2016, and we continue to share their music as much as we can. Basically, we’re huge fans and we feel like you should also take some time to get into this band. That said, Deeper are sharing one final single called “The Knife” off their new album prior to Friday’s release date. It is yet another reason to get into this band.

Auto-Pain is out this Friday, March 27th and pre-orders are up now on Fire Talk.

Deeper Announce New 7″

Deeper dropped their stunning self-titled LP last year via Fire Talk, and we did a lot of coverage on that album; I even booked them at my super-last-minute SXSW show, where they killed it. Now, the band are back with the announcement of a new 7″, featuring a John Maus cover and this new track below. I love the immediacy of the rhythm section here, offering up an energetic bob of right from the get-go. They don’t stray too far either, bringing in some discordant angular guitar riffs to craft the contrast where they vocals can weave in and out. This tune’s super rad, and they’ll have the 7″ on hand when they hit the road with label mates Dehd this Fall.

Erasers Announce Pulse Point

Usually when I write about acts from Australia, they’re almost always from Melbourne or surrounding areas; it’s rare to find ourselves in Perth, but here we are with Erasers. The duo have just a announced their sophomore LP, leading with this entrancing new single. This number is a special one, illustrating the duo’s care in their song craft; the tune has this darkened electronic pulse that barely moves, steadying the entire song around its core. From time to time, added electronic notes give the song a slight rise, as do the carefully placed guitar lines that sort of hang in the air. And, when Rebecca’s voice comes in, it’s almost like a calming wash atop it all, layered as an instrument almost. Pulse Points is out on July 12th via Fire Talk/Pouring Dream.
