NOV3L Announce Non-Fiction

It’ll be hard to get past the nostalgic leaning of NOV3L for many listeners, but rest assured, despite nodding to the past, there’s something wholly refreshing about the approach the band are employing as they announce their debut LP, Non-Fiction. Those guitar chops are scissor-sharp, plucked carefully so as to not set your feet kicking in the air. Bass lines bob and weave, seemingly indifferent to the rest of the outfit’s functioning. The vocals come off as slightly indifferent, but also yearning for a listener to slide right in. When woven together, you get this sort of bastard child of Gang of Four and the Rapture, only spun in the fashion of that middle school slow dance; it’s disorienting, as you expect a turn and a step here, they never give you that, steadying themselves in their own brave brand. Hopefully we get more of that from Non-Fiction, out May 28th via Flemish Eye Records.

While it may seem like NOV3L are a few years behind the rehash of post-punk angular antics, it’s fair to say at least they do it right…all the way down to the ethos of the genre. They operate as a collective, crafting music crafting clothes crafting art on their own terms from within the confines of a singular house. That all makes sense when you listen to their new single, which is a foot-stomping nostaglic punk nod with social awareness; they seem to be taking on the corporate structures that make us all wage-slaves. They release their new EP this Friday via Flemish Eye Records.

Everyone Needs More NOV3L in Their Life

Listening to NOV3L I can’t help running through the various memories in my mind at all the great dance parties we had when kids started revisiting classic acts like Gang of Four…eventually leading us into the realm of Franz Ferdinand and various like minded acts. I mention those two because the Vancouver act, who’ve just announced their debut EP seem to combine the styles of the two in a fresh fashion. The guitars are angular and sharp, just like GoF would rock in their heyday, but there’s still this pop sensibility that pulls folks out of their bar stools and onto the dance floor. Geez….you really need this in your lyfe. Look for the debut EP via Flemish Eye Records on February 15th.
