Great New Video and Single from The Spook School

This song is for the math nerds and the pop fans, so be warned. Oh, and it’s also filled with exuberance like you w0n’t find anywhere else. At the beginning of the track, you’re seeing the Spook School build in their own brand of joyous pop, and then while the shouts of “I am bigger than a hexadecimal” are blasted, you can feel the band fueling up the tension. They unleash it as the video bursts through with a group of folks all happy to join in the bands proclamation. Still, don’t let the fun of the track take away that there’s still an underlying theme lurking here with the band, but I’ll let you (or them) come to terms with that. This song features on their new album, Try to Be Hopeful, which is out soon via Fortuna Pop.

The Spook School Prep Album

spook-schoolIt’s been a bit since I’ve heard from the Spook School, but by the sounds of their new single, it looks like the group is ready to come back with a vengeance. Their last album, Dress Up (2013) was phenomenal; it was upbeat indiepop. You get the hooks and charm, but it’s played with a heavier hand.  Think of acts like Speedy Ortiz or Joanna Gruesome, but with a more charmed approach, making them slightly more appealing to those with softer spots in their listening hearts. They’ll be releasing Try to Be Hopeful this October via Fortuna Pop, with a promise to take on subject matters dealing with “sexuality and being awesome.” You can also check out this really great video of the band discussing issues of transgender with LJG HERE (it’s pretty great).

Mammoth Penguins Won Me Over

mammothMammoth Penguins just released their debut album, Hide and Seek, last week via Fortuna Pop, and it should come as no surprise that I’m in love with the effort.  The star of the show, and the most recent single from the group is Emma Kupa, formerly of my favorites Standard Fare.  I love her songwriting, not to mention the way the guitar sounds on the album; I guess her distinctive voice doesn’t hurt either.  But, I think any one that’s been into the guitar pop vibe the last few years will find that this is one of their favorite albums; for instance, if you like Gold Bears or Eternal Summers, this is the album for you.  You can grab it right now right HERE.

Are You Ready for Mammoth Penguins

mammothA few years ago I was introduced to Standard Fare, and shortly after they broke up.  So I kept an eye on Emma Kupa, and I’m really excited to hear what comes from her new group, Mammoth Penguins. This song’s been floating around in demo fashion, but it’s really impressive now that the noise has been amped up, pushing the pop envelope.  There’s a few moments when the song settles down, allowing Kupa’s enchanting vocals to lament her (or the narrator’s) lack of accomplishments in comparison to her elder.  It looks like Fortuna Pop will be releasing the band’s album, Hide and Seek, later on in this year, so listen to this nice first taste.

I Totally Missed This: New Milky Wimpshake LP

encore-un-effortI was browsing RSD, as is my yearly ritual.  I grab a few things, then just wonder around to see if there’s something special…and there it was: a new Milky Wimpshake LP! I had no idea it was coming, but many, it’s such a gem of a little LP.  For those of you that fall for endearing jangling indie pop, then this is going to be right up your alley.  The release is titled Encore, Un Effort…and Fortuna Pop put out this little video of one of the record’s standouts; I love the interplay between male/female vocalists, which is apparent throughout the LP.  Look around your local store, and maybe you’ll find one lurking in the leftovers bin.

New Music from the Comet Gain

cgiHonestly, I’m always going to throw out a new Comet Gain song; they’ve long been one of my most adored bands, so I see no reason to stop that nonsense now.  On their latest single, you get a glimpse at some of the more explorative approaches the band has taken over their career.  This tune is definitely more of a far out sound, and less pop-centric, but I think it portrays a band that continues to grown and shape their sound.  This tune comes off the Fingerprint Ritual EP, which was recorded at the same time as their last LP, Paperback Ghost. It’ll be released by Fortuna Pop on April 6th.

Brand New Joanna Gruesome

grewsumThis new Joanna Gruesome has to be one of the hottest commodities not yet out there; I feel like everyone is talking about it…and no one is saying a bad word.  So, when a band and a record like that comes along, the best thing we can do is to turn up the singles, and prematurely (possibly unjustly) make up our mind. This tune has a real soft side, which is one of the reason’s I’m in love with it. Still, the band brings  their tenacity, switching between that softness and a brash bit of rock n’ roll.  Look for Peanut Butter to hit on May 11th via Slumberland Records/Fortuna Pop.

Jam This New Martha EP

martaI love a good batch of enthusiastic punk rock tunes, especially when they come with a bit of rambunctious attitude, and possibly a bit of lo-fi recording value. Martha have been on my radar for some time, after releasing Courting Strong via Fortuna Pop.  So, they’ve now got this great little 10″ EP coming out, even though the tunes are a few years old.  The self-titled EP is getting a vinyl release courtesy of Brighton’s Tuff Enuff Records, and those of you who are into the rock n’ roll are definitely going to enjoy it. Cuz Pitchfork Said It Wuz Cool: ft. Joanna Gruesome and Jimmy Whispers

grewsumThis is a new feature for me. I’m currently just re-posting what P-Fork had to say. They’re huge; they get priority. So, if you read this already, skip ahead. Sorry for wasting your time, kind of. The first jam is from Joanna Gruesome…it’s a more rocking version of their previous hits.  It comes from their next LP, Peanut Butter, which has a release date on Slumberland/Fortuna Pop near the end of Spring.

The next jam is from Jimmy Whispers, who I wrote about a few weeks back, and he’s riding the coattails of P4K to the bank! He’s constructing these bedroom jams that definitely bare some DIY/home-studio perfections, but dammit if they’re not catchy as hell. You’ll find the tune on Summer in Pain, which hits stores on March 24th. And remember, this is all cuz Pitchfork said it wuz cool.

Evans the Death Push The Noise Up

evenIn the past, I think the music of Evans the Death has had an element of safety to it; it’s not that I don’t appreciate that…by any means. But the instant this guitars feedback in this new single, it was the instant I realized that these youngsters are branching out in directions I didn’t quite expect…though it’s very much welcomed. It’ll be nice to see a young group grow up, sonically before our eyes. There’s this oddity to Katherine’s voice too, not in an off-putting direction, but in the tonality that really allows her vocal performance to hold the song together.  It’s another exciting reason to look forward to the band’s new LP, Expect Delays…being issued by Slumberland and  Fortuna Pop on March 10th.
