FFFX In Pictures: Sunday Edition

FFFXSunday Funday.

The skies cleared and left behind a gorgeous day for festival goers. Someone defiled the FFF porta-potty photo booth. Hence, it became a feature of the skyline. The grounds recovered from the rain of the previous days; the landscaping tweaks certainly seemed to work and the layout changes prevented most potential destruction from stomping boots. I was pretty stoked for the weather change as Sunday was the most complete day of old and new, jams and oddities.

We have on tap photos from sets by Golden Dawn Arkestra, Title Fight, Alvvays, Growlers, Chromeo, Future Islands, Ms. Hill and more…

FFFX In Pictures: Saturday Edition

FFFX Saturday 63 16Senores y Senoras, nosotros tenemos mas influencia sobre sus hijos que tienes, pero los queremos. Creado y regalo de Los Angeles, Juana’s Adiccion…

Park and Rec Strikes Back – The rains came down after the festing on Friday. There was a bit of standing water remaining and a few potential sinkholes that the city needed to be covered up by mulch before the doors could open. We were allowed in to take refuge from the gathering masses. 1:20pm, was the new start time. Early bands unfortunately did not get to perform, mainly for me I was disappointed to see A Giant Dog with the downtown backdrop. Oh well, I got to lurk during their KUTX recording session and we had quite a bit of jams to fill that void. Shots of Jane’s Addiction, Joanna Gruesome, Ride, Charlatans UK, Fuzz and more after the break…

FFFX In Pictures: Friday Edition

CHVRCHESLet’s get the photo party started. You may have already read our thoughts on the fest along with our interviews (more still coming, allegedly).

Friday, we dodged a bullet. The weather held out for the most part and we were able to stay fashionable in the face of volatile moisture levels. We all were able to dance and mill about, an occasional sprinkle to chill us out. Click through to get shots of Viet Cong, Toro Y Moi, Peaches, Parquet Courts, Cheap Trick, CHVRCHES and more.

FFFX: Team ATH Recap

FFFX BannerThere was a lot of talk this year comparing Fun Fun Fun Fest to ACL this. Perhaps it is the proximity with the second weekend, perhaps the tenth anniversary. FFFX returned to it’s original home with a few tweaks to the layout to accommodate demands by Parks and Recreation department. I understand the city wants to protect the competing interests investments, but without events like FFF, this land is kind of under-loved. Let’s get through to the thoughts from our team that had boots on the ground and away from the grounds, too.

FFF Fest Artist Spotlight: Parquet Courts

10599702_307123006145061_6453325887410383768_nY’all, we are a mere few days away from a holy weekend at Auditorium Shores, which means you should be getting very excited for Fun Fun Fun Fest 2015. Today’s preview features a staple of the lo-fi jangle scene, and surely a band that will make your festival a bit brighter: Parquet Courts. After a few albums, years of building up a live show reputation, and even alternate universe versions of their band (see Parkay Quarts), the band has brought a punk flair to the lo-fi scene, and we love them for it. Take a listen to an older single from the band below, reminisce and get stoked to see them at the fest. Catch them on the Black Stage on Friday at 3:45 or at The Parish at 11:30 on Sunday.

FFF Artist Spotlight: Mikal Cronin

mikal croninWe’re a week out from Fun Fun Fun Fest 2015, and you should probably be getting your schedule nailed down, so I’m here to help you out. Mikal Cronin is an act that’s sure to make your list of highlights on Monday after the fest when all is said and done. Once you press play on the single “Made My Mind Up” from back in January of this year, you’ll be enamored with the breezy alternative rock that Cronin brings to the table. The driving electric guitar, embellished with tinkling piano and soaring vocals will certainly be wonderful to start your fest off at 2:25 on Friday afternoon on the Orange Stage. Or perhaps a good way to round out your first day of festing Friday night at 10:45 at The Mohawk.

P.S. Have you picked up your wristband at The Funderdome yet? Get to stepping.

FFF Fest Artist Spotlight: Joanna Gruesome

joanna_gruesome_2015Fun Fun Fun Fest is a week and some change away, so I’m going to bring you more previews of artists that deserve your time and attention at Auditorium Shores or at FFF Nites. Today’s spotlight falls on Joanna Gruesome , a band out of Cardiff whose punkish pop tunes are bound to be the perfect atmosphere for the festival. The band is touring in support of their most recent album, Peanut Butter, that came out earlier this year which has been calling the public’s attention to the group and their effortless dichotomy between harsh rock and roll and sugary sweet vocals. Take a listen below to the lead single from that release, and then check them out at the festival. Joanna Gruesome play Saturday at 1:20 on the Orange Stage as well as at 9:15 at RIP Red 7 (611 E. 7th) on Friday Night. Also, don’t forget to pick up your wristband early at The Funderdome and take advantage of all the extra benefits the folks at Transmission are offering you:

FFF Fest Artist Spotlight: Alvvays

Alvvays. press photo. red. Gavin KeenMan, are we Austinites lucky. We just finished wrapping our coverage of ACL last Friday with B. Gray’s pretty photos, and now we’re getting ready to take on Auditorium Shores for the funnest of the fests. Kicking off our coverage, I’ve got an artist spotlight for one of my favorite SXSW stars, Alvvays. I caught this group a few times last spring, and each time they made me fall in love with their pop hooks and jangle rock sensibilities a bit more. They’ve simply got a recipe for delight– the impossibly pure vocals of leading lady, Molly Rankin combine with the crisp guitar work and are supplemented by bombastic drums. What more could you want in a festival setting? Nothing. So take a listen below, fall in love, and get ready to catch them on Sunday on the Orange Stage at Fun Fun Fun Fest.
