Fuzzy Pop from Heavenly Creatures

The week before SXSW hit Austin was a bit hectic, but we made it through, so a few of our tracks coming through today will be looking back on last week’s hits. We knew this Heavenly Creatures EP was coming, and it has the perfect bit of delightful joy to bounce you into Monday. It’s interesting that the band is brandishing a jangly bit of female-fronted fuzz pop, as Austin was filled with such ladies brandishing their guitars with flair all week long. I’d put this group at the top, however, especially with little bits of horns hanging in the background. Look for their EP, The Summer Will Kill Us All, available as we speak from Jigsaw.

Short Fuzz Pop from Navy Gangs

navygangsThis short number is getting at me right now. It’s a fuzzy pop number, but there’s like this underlying sadness lurking beneath it, or at least alluded to by the song’s title and the emotional feeling. Vocals lurk just behind the guitar chords, haunting the track in a strange manner. I kind of wish that the tune went on a little longer, so it could buzz in my eardrums for just a minute or so more, but it’s great that it is so impactful in such a short span. Look for Navy Gangs to release their debut EP on September 14th via No Roads.

New Music from Burnt Palms

Something that arrives with fall continues to encourage me to take solace in my roots, as a true fan of indie pop–you know, the uber twee sort that you always want on your best mixtapes to girls/guys you’re crushing on.  If I could, I’d stick the entirety of this new album by Burnt Palms on there.  It’s a self-titled LP, but it’s filled with short songs featuring fuzz guitars and hip female vocal harmonies. Basically, it’s a mixtape in and of itself, giving you the ability to sink your teeth and your heart into the soul of the music.  Love it so hard.

Rambunctious New Single from the Maxines

In the midst of everything out there, you gotta look hard to find catchy gems like this new number from the Maxines.  The Olympia duo are releasing their Drugstore EP on the eclectic K Records next week, and while it may be a bit short in length it definitely packs a nice little punch for your ears. For a band with only two members, there’s definitely a loud sound coming out, harkening back to the bratty riot-girl efforts from back in the day.  The EP also features guitarist Matt Maurillo on vocals, so be sure to pick this one up when it hits your stores next week.
