Jackie Mendoza Announces Debut EP

Usually, I don’t like to hype on whatever the big blogs are hyping on, but I’m already a huge fan of Jackie Mendoza, so I might as well continue that streak. For years I’ve been jamming out to Gingerlys, the band she fronted for some time, which was adored by indiepop nerds all over. Interestingly, while her solo work definitely feels like her, it’s great to see how expansive her sound has gotten. Samples create this ethereal world where her vocals walk like ghosts through gurgling bleeps and bloops, which seems exactly the vibe they chose for the video here. LuvHZ EP will drop on April 26th via Luminelle. You can also jump back to last week and check out Jackie’s responses to our SXSW questionnaire HERE. Hopefully I can run into her at the festival and discuss her reggaeton appreciation.

Another Tune from the New Gingerlys Release

It’s probably a really unfair time for Gingerlys; people will unfortunately just give them the blanket comparison to Alvvays…not a bad thing per se, but just so you know, the Gingerlys released Jumprope EP several weeks before Alvvays had their first release. Just saying. Other than usage of melody and a female vocalist, the structure and sound of the songs definitely differs. Listen in the background for the way the guitars distortedly twinkle in the distance…and the vocals seem happy to sort of sit atop the mix, rather than propel the track. The self-titled LP from Gingerlys will be released on November 17th via Babe City/Topshelf; Alvvays fans will love it, but mostly people that have really good taste in music will love it.

Slept On This Gingerlys Tune

I know better than this, but all my friends were raving about the delicious new pop ditty from Gingerlys, so I finally got my ears to it. It’s got this shimmering bit of synth beneath the skin, peeled back with nods to distorted jangling…a gift that no one ever refused. Energetic and fun, but soaked in the dreamy nuance that made all my friends adore it. Look for the group to release their self-titled debut on Babe City Records on November 17th.
