ATX Spotlight: Abram Shook Announces New Album

Abram ShookWe’ve been behind Abram Shook since his early Great Nostalgic days, and we were especially happy to see his progression with Sun Marquee last year.  It seems that he’s not long to stay in one place, as his newest single continues to show is continually evolving sound; he includes little bits of drum samples in this track, as well as some funky guitar chops.  His ability to operate within varying genres and styles is one of the many reasons his music’s always been so enticing, which makes us even happier he’ll have another album, Landscape Dream, coming our way this year; it’ll see a release via Western Vinyl on May 12th.

Top 15 Texas Albums of 2011

Oh man, is 2011 over already?  It is indeed, which means End of Year list time!  Of course, that means it’s time for you to tell us where we went wrong, but on this list, we’re thinking we got it pretty right on.  You’ll notice we expanded our list to a Top 15 of Texas Artists, as we thought our state did a great job, musically (not politically) speaking this year.  I’ll admit, it might be a little Austin-centric, but we’re based in the town, so get the Austin word a lot faster.  Apologies to Houston and San Antonio, as your scenes weren’t represented, but it’s nothing personal.  Feel free to leave us a comment to yell at us or tell us we were right on.  But, that being said, remember this is just the OPINION of a few dudes keeping it real in Austin.

Single Cuts Music Collaboration

Not long ago, our amigo Abram of The Great Nostalgic came to us with this crazy idea of gathering some of Austin’s finest musicians and asking them to write, records, and mix a song in one day.  Despite thinking the guy may have lost his mind, we loved the idea and were excited to see if he could actually pull it off.  Well now welcome Single Cuts, the project created by Mr. Shook along with some of the finest talents this town has to offer.  Already the collaboration project has posted a new song entitled “Jackie” which features members of The Lemurs, Royal Forrest, One Hundred Flowers, vocals from Dana Falconberry, of course Abram from TGC, and engineering from Erik Wofford.  For a song written, recorded, and mixed in less than 24 hours, it actually turned out pretty swell.  Stay tuned to the Single Cuts website, twitter, and facebook for updates on another upcoming project.

Show Pictures: Great Nostalgic @ Emo’s (4/2)

On Saturday night, we made our way out to Emo’s for the record release party thrown by our local friends in The Great Nostalgic.  The night turned out to be a success with happenin’ crowds for fellow local and supporting acts Burgess Meredith, One Hundred Flowers, and Royal Forest.  Our dearest friend and photographer Brian Gray also made it out on Saturday to get us some fancy photos from a few of the bands.  These can of course be seen after the jump.

We here at ATH are such huge fans of Austin band The Great Nostalgic that we’ve almost taken it as our personal mission to help grow their populairty.  With a debut record so forward thinking and creative, it’s been easy to support them as best we can.  This Saturday at Emo’s, the group is celebrating the release of their sophomore effort Hope We Live Like We Promised with a headlining show supported by some other local buzz bands.  Joining GC on stage are Burgess Meredith, One Hundred Flowers, and recent ATH fave Royal Forest.  With a great lineup, cheap door fee, and even cheaper tall boys, you should be there.  We haven’t gotten around to a proper review of the new album yet, but we’ve gotten a snew preview, and can guarantee that it’s going to be a huge leap forward for the band.  Why not pick up a copy at the show?

SXSW Interviews: The Great Nostalgic

Make no mistake about it, The Great Nostalgic are easily one of our favorite up and coming local bands.  What with an appearance on our album’s of the year list in 2009, labeled as Austin album of the year, and major exposure here, it’s easy to see we dig their music.  In our quest to let the world know more about TGN, we recently sat down with leading man and primary songwriter Abram Shook to discuss the current state of his band.  You’ll be happy to hear that they are still going strong and getting ready to release their sophomore LP on the world.  Follow the jump for more.
