Taryn Miller crafts soaring pop masterpieces under the name of Your Friend. Her debut album, Gumption, puts her in the same vein of similar artists like Beach House, though she’s mostly working on her own up in Lawrence, Kansas; I note that because she sounds nothing like what one would associate with the Lawrence scene from a decade ago. This brand new single from Your Friend sounds really striking. It soars in the way you remember the early Beach House tracks sounding…full of a pristine vocal resting atop some very carefully crafted sonic landscapes. It sounds like Taryn Miller (the lady behind the project) has gotten some other layering tricks up here sleeve too, rounding out the empty space with touches of electronic atmospherics to build the track up in the listener’s ears. She’s just announced a new record for her Domino titled Gumption, aiming to have it out on January 29th of next year.
