Scott Hutchison Found Dead

No official cause of death, but recent tweets and a note from the family have alluded to mental health instability. I have lost friends to depression. If you need help, it is out there. Just tell one person. It doesn’t have to be a friend. I want to take a moment to remind everyone in the Austin music community that SIMS and HAAMexist

Here is a happier memory with the rest of Frightened Rabbit. I was lucky enough to be able to sit in on lounge act sessions when WOXY would come to town. Here is their performance of “Swim Until You Can’t See Land.”

Show Preview: SXSWfm HAAM Benefit (9/23)

HAAM-poster-final-web-400x400What’s better than a show with a great lineup of locals?  A show with a great lineup of locals all playing for a good cause.  That’s what’s going down on Tuesday at the Palm Door on 6th and we wanted to get the word out as best we can.  The show is free, but 20% of the bar will be donated to HAAM so get your drink on!  You can also donate directly to HAAM onsite or by doing so online here.  Let’s not forget this stacked local lineup featuring The Sour Notes, Otis the Destroyer, Possessed by Paul James, and Residual Kid.  Doors @ 7, music @ 8.  Let’s get it on!

More event information can be found on the SXSWfm site.

Photo Pop 2012: Photography and Rock n’ Roll @ Red 7 (11.9)

I’ve been waiting to make this announcement since we first began planning Photo Pop 2012, which takes place Friday, November 9th.  As a native Austinite I realize how important the community aspect of the local music scene is, so I wanted to highlight some of our favorite photographers who work their tails off to bring you the best footage of our local scene.  Photographers Rick Kern, Brian Gray, Tim Griffin, Pooneh Ghana, Randy Cremean and Gary Miller will be displaying and SELLING prints of their favorite photography shot here in Austin.  A portion of those proceeds will go to HAAM.  But, that’s not the end of it.  Since the photography wouldn’t go down without the rock, we’re putting on a show afterwards with some of our favorite local bands: Gender Infiniti, Low Times, Tiger Waves, Shivery Shakes and Grape Street.  It’s a chance to enjoy some incredible photography (and get your hands on some good prints) plus stay and enjoy the rock n’ roll. Or you can choose one or the other, just be sure to support the local scene; it’s what makes it great. Here’s a tune from one of the bands, Tiger Waves.

Doors 9:30pm
Tickets $5 @ Door

That crazy kid Adi is up to his tricks again with another sure to be packed show at The Mohawk this Friday evening.  Music wise, your entertainment is provided by The Happen-Ins, Candi & The Strangers, The Bubbles, and DJ uLOVEi.  You comic geeks out there can also expect something called a “comic book inspired fashion show”… sounds cool to me.  You’ll also see some double photo booth action, on site painting/drawing, and tons of other art work on display available for purchase.  I’m sure this will be the “it place” to be on Friday.  Check out that fancy poster for more info about sponsors and beneficiary HAAM.
