Tony Jay Shares Another Single from Hey There Flower

Recently we talked about how Tony Jay would be re-releasing Hey There Flower (originally on a small tape run via Paisley Shirt), and since a lot of folks haven’t heard the album, we’re here with another track that might turn you onto Mike Ramos’ songwriting. This particular track is a slow-burn, with the notes sort of hanging in the air like a bubble on the wind, floating endlessly into they disappear beyond you. Mike’s voice hangs deep inside the mix, like he’s singing to us from some dampened cavern, stirring your emotions as his voice drifts in and out of your consciousness. This track appears on the LP, which is out on vinyl on May 6th courtesy of Mt. St. Mtn; look for the band to hit the road with some dates this summer, including a run in July with our friend RE Seraphin.

Tony Jay is the solo project of Michael Ramos, who we’ve chatted with about Flowertown (he also plays in April Magazine/Al Harper), and we should celebrate today with the announcement of a vinyl LP version of Hey There Flower. The video version of this has been floating about for a bit, but why not share it all together, as it seems to also encompass a little bit of Ramos’ sense of humor. I love the balance in his songwriting; it alternates between this intimate dreaminess and this darker personality, all the while selling this incredible guitar sound that seems omnipotent, despite the pull of lo-fidelity. It’s been a slow news week for my tastes, so having a reason to post this video again seems perfect. The vinyl version will be out in May via Mt. St. Mtn.; you can also listen to it all over at Paisley Shirt who put out a version of it on tape last year.

There’s probably only a handful of labels that I’m ride or die for of late, but certainly have to admit that Paisley Shirt Records is one of them…especially with this new Tony Jay on the horizon. My joy comes here in listening to the recordings, like bedroom pop for the outsiders; the pop made at home for no one else, with the occasional friend throwing in a note here and there. In listening through a few times on repeat, there’s this really subtle little movement around the 1:30 mark where a faint little guitar line sort of flutters around like a moth looking for light. I’m just totally mesmerized, and can’t wait to hear the whole LP; Hey There Flower drops on May 14th.
