Divers Bring Out New Single

dvrsThe guys in Divers talk of walking the fine long between indie rock and punk rock, and listening to their new single, you can hear them straddling that strange divide.  Opening this tune is this jagged guitar and furious punch; it reminds me of Les Savy Fav at their most bombastic.  But, those moments subside quickly and move into a safer world where Win Butler would feel most protected..or one of those Hold Steady cats. It’s definitely something I enjoy, though I’m not sure where it falls in my life. I guess we’ll see when their album Hello Hello falls on February 17th.

Power Pop Gem from Cheap Girls

cheapSeems like everyone’s collaborating these days, but with Cheap Girls working with Craig from the Hold Steady, it just seems to fit perfectly.  They both have this traditional American rock sound; there’s not a lot of pretension or excess to what they’re writing.  Here we have the band just doing their best to bang out a solid rock tune that will be featured on their new record, Famous Graves, and it encompasses a pretty straightforward rock song.  It’s the sort of tune you want to sing with, yet it’s bold enough that it also makes you want to rock just enough. You can let yourself enjoy this record on May 13th via Xtra Mile Recordings.

Date Tuesday, April 10th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900p
Tickets $10 from Frontgate

In a busy week for our rock n’ roll community, this seems like a great place to start off with previews, unless you catch ATDIMegafaun has quietly been making a name for themselves with their gentle brand of folk rock–and we’ve love every bit of it. Their self-titled album from the fall of last year received some great praise all over the Internet, and it should say something that they’ve been chosen to pack Mohawk right after the Hold Steady finishes. Also on the bill for the evening is Field Report and Dana Falconberry, designed to perfectly whet your appetite for the Faun.  Come on, it’s time for us all to get out and take in the great music we’re so privileged to have come into town.

Show Preview: Craig Finn @ Frank (12/10)

Date 12/10/11
Location Frank
Doors 900p
Tickets $12 @ Ticketfly

Legendary Hold Steady front man Craig Finn is pulling into town at Frank on Saturday night.  Fellow veteran songwriter Will Johnson will be performing with Finn and I would anticipate at least one or two duets before the night is over.  I doubt you’ll find a better songwriter showcase on any bill in town.

New Tunes From Titus Andronicus

ta_mm_04Shortly after the release of their 2008 album The Airing of Grievances, Jersey band Titus Andronicus are returning in 2010 with a new album entitled The Monitor.  The band’s sophomore LP is said to have a civil war theme to it with some spoken word/acting guest appearances by members of the Hold Steady, Vivian Girls and others.  Prior to that release Titus plan to release a 7″ single featuring the two songs we have posted for you below.  These two tracks were apparently meant to be joined into one song and were only split to fit neatly onto a two sided 7″.  I’d suggest firing up our ATH radio so you can hear the two songs together in all their epic glory.  Physical copies of the 7″ single will be available Feb. 9th and the new LP drops March 9th on XL Recordings.  More info and track listing can be found on the PFork.
