Ticket Giveaway: Protomartyr @ Holy Mountain (5.30)

chaosChaos in Tejas and Transmission are bringing some incredible bands into town this week, and we’ve got yet another chance for you to win a pair of tickets. Under Color of Official Right is one of the most rewarding listens this year, and the group dominated the SXSW post-hype machine with several great performances.  You’ll get a chance to see the band perform in a fairly intimate setting over at Holy Mountain, supported by two incredible local acts: Xetas and Simple Circuit.  Just because you love Protomartyr doesn’t mean you can’t get there early to catch these two remarkable bands too.

It’s the midway point in the year for all intents and purposes, so leave your Favorite Album of 2014 (so far) and I’ll pick a winner that most closely aligns with our tastes.  Contest ends Thursday at Noon.

Show Review: Bells & Parks @ Holy Mountain

bellsandparkVersailles, the ambitious and aptly titled EP of Austin new comer Bells and Parks, strives to create the detailed soundscapes and layers reflective of their self appointed Baroque/Dream Pop genre. A follow up to to the March 13th single “Streams”, Versailles is executed with the focus that was missing from the group’s freshmen effort. While “Streams” sounds like the excited songwriting effort of a new Micro-Korg owner, Versailles is more contained and thought out, with mature use of synth layers to inform the songwriter’s vision rather than overwhelm it.

Show Preview: S. Carey @ Holy Mountain (4.7)

scarey

Date Monday, April 7th
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9 PM
Tickets $10 from Transmission

I imagine it’s been fairly difficult for S. Carey to escape his ties to Bon Iver, but with the recent release of Range of Light, he seems to continue to get beyond the shadows of his other work.  His songwriting is quite intimate and personal, allowing listeners to find themselves lost in his musical compositions.  He’ll be joined at Holy Mountain by White Hinterland, another group that’s crafting these ornate pieces that quietly immerse you in another world.  And, opening the night will be local lady-hero, Dana Falconberry, who really needs no introduction.  You’ve got three great musicians, and no excuses, so head out tonight! And, S. Carey has a free show at Waterloo at 6 if you’re into that sort of thing.

Brazos

Date Wednesday, December 11th
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $10 from Transmission

I’m actually a little amazed at how much is going on in the music community this week, and this is an absolute must see show! Brazos, the one-time Austin band is touring in support of Saltwater, which we enjoyed; it also got a lot of great national press too..deservedly so.  We also did this great takeaway show with them HERE. Plus, you’ll get to see Ski Lodge again, who made one of our Top 50 LPs of the year, Big Heart.  The last time they played, B.Gray and I were having a grand old time.  And, you’ll get to see Austin’s own rising star, Jess Williamson.  You win all around by attending this show on Wednesday night.

If you RSVP, you can get in to see the all the acts for a measly $3.  Pretty much no excuse for you guys since it’s cheap, and you already took off Friday for the festival.

Date 7/12/13
Location Holy Mountain
Doors 9pm
Tickets $5

It’s a bit of a slow weekend in Austin for national touring acts so what better time to get out there and support your local musicians?  Easily your best opportunity for some great local music comes on Friday night at Holy Mountain with a vinyl release show celebrating the touchdown of Royal Forest’s new album Spillway. Making the show that much better is the undercard with local favorites Frank Smith, Tiger Waves, and Your Friendly Ghost all joining in on the fun.  Not sure I could put together a better local bill if you asked me to.  Get out there, tip your bartenders, and buy some merch jerks.
