There continues to be an unreasonable amount of great music coming out nowadays, and I’m absolutely baffled at how it just never ceases; there’s been nothing but week after week of tunes for me to fawn over. This week’s a little all over the place, with a little bit of rock, a little bit of pop, a little bit of songwriter and back again. Wanted to begin with the great cover of “Rock n’ Roll” by the Feelies, then jump right into some of my favorite tracks of the week. I mean, new Tony Jay and Red Pants make all of us winners. Plus, there’s a new Lewsberg tune floating about, which I definitely have included in other playlists. And, I got back on that review game with a track by track breakdown of Holy Wave’s latest. So spend some time looking back at last week!

Holy Wave – Five of Cups

For the past however many years, Holy Wave has been working in the Austin music scene, often times as the sort of bastard step-child of heavy-hitters the Black Angels, and sadly overlooked more often than not. Careful ears will have seen that the group have been gradually moving away from similarities, and Five of Cups is the perfect statement album, making the group a powerful beast all their own. Broke it down into track by track for you all, with some trite final thoughts at the end.

We’re still in the middle of a great year of music, and as we hit that sweet spot, there seem to be more tracks coming out every day; we try to cover as much as we can, but admittedly, we’re not perfect! It was really nice to see Emma Anderson of Lush pop her head up with a brand new track from her forthcoming solo LP. Personally, I loved that new Pachyman jam, as that guy rules and I’m totally hoping everyone catches on to his vibe. A little Austin love for Holy Wave who continue to impress with the sounds of their new LP. Then there’s old ATH faves like Pia Fraus and Tan Cologne, plus the Who Is She supergroup making the cut too. Browse, stream, enjoy.

Holy Wave Share New Single

If I went back about ten years to the first time we heard Holy Wave, I’ll be honest, I might not have expected them to end up where they are now, musically stepping outside of the traditional psych realm they long championed as part of the Austin scene. Their latest track, seems like you’ve taken some nod to a jazz-infused krautrock and blended it with the foggy atmospheric pop of acts like the Clientele; it feels like a track perfect for a day drenched in rain and clouds (something we’re not quite accustomed to down here in Austin!). My fascination really circles this incredible rhythm pulse it gives the song this thick life that allows the rest of the tune to swell and ebb; it’s a beautiful piece that has us really excited for Five of Cups, which is out August 4th via Suicide Squeeze. Have Another New Holy Wave Tune

Looks like Nathan has you all set up for some nice streams over the weekend, but I’d also encourage you to check out this new tune from our Austin friends in Holy Wave. “Interloper” is the title track of the bands brand new album and features a lot of the dreamy and psych oriented sounds we’ve grown to love about the band over the years. This one certainly has a Pink Floyd influence behind it, but a more pop orientation. Chalk it up as another hit for the Austin legends.

Holy Wave Share Escapism

Austin’s Holy Wave have long been known for crafting these entrancing psychedelic rock tunes, but as they prepare for the release of Interloper, it seems they’ve gradually begun to grow their sound. Now, don’t think their intention to alter moods and states of mind has changed; this song still illustrates a sort of purposeful trance, though it’s being spun more through the window of dream pop. The wash of atmospherics that coats the tune creates this light fog through which you can make out audible pop moments. It’s filled with all these little musical nuances, proving that the band have gone far beyond my expectations; this seems like the band at their very finest! Interloper will be out on May 8th via Reverberation Appreciation Society.

Austin’s Holy Wave have been around for a bit, building their status as one of Austin’s premier psychedelic bands. With the announcement of the band’s new album, Interloper, we get to hear the band expanding their sound beyond our expectations. Honestly, they’re dealing more with this intoxicating krautrock, where they’ve fused these propulsive electronic elements with their more traditional bits. It’s created this organic atmosphere that seems out of this world; it feels like they’ve taken the experimental aspect of their sound and shipped it off into space…with just the slightest hint of melody in the vocals.

Levitation Announces First Wave Of Lineup–Tickets On Sale Now

Levitation has made all of our days here in Austin with the announcement of the first wave of artists for the 2019 edition of the spectacular festival. We’re no strangers to the festival, as it’s become one of our favorite excuses to run around town seeing incredible bands, both local and national. Now a fall festival (Nov 7-10), we’ll be treated to the likes of Angel Olsen, Kurt Vile & the Violators, Holy Wave, Death Valley Girls, Allah Las, Chelsea Wolfe, Dinosaur Jr., Devendra Banhart, Black Moth Super Rainbow, and so many more. Tickets for individual shows and four day passes are on sale now. Pretty Rad Holy Wave Tune

There’s something about the new developments in the Holy Wave world that have piqued my interest; they’ve stepped slightly outside the realm of psychedelia to capture a broader sound, particularly on this new single. The first several minutes of the track do harken to the core genre, though they’ve included these brighter notes, just the faintest hint of Stereolab perhaps ebbing through. Then, the vocals enter the picture, with two seemingly contrasting vocal pieces, playing to each other; it’s a nod to dreamier bedroom pop, though with a larger sound one can’t escape. It’s like some weird sandwich that encapsulates everything in the current musical climate; I love it. Check the band’s Adult Fear LP on March 30th via Reverberation Appreciation Society.

ATX Spotlight: Another Video From Holy Wave

hwaveAustin amigos Holy Wave just dropped their new LPFreaks of Nurture last month and I can tell you that it is a legit masterpiece. I’ve always thought the band showed tons of promise, and to me they’ve finally really hit their stride. If you have yet to hear much from the new LP, well shame on you firstly, but secondly you should check out their trippy new video for album single “Minstrel’s Gallop”. The video is basically a live shot of the band with some weird bubble action going on in the background. Maybe this will entice you visual weirdos to give the band and shot and pick up their new album (buy it here).
