Keep It Local: New Video From Holy Wave

Zuma_Holy_Wave_Home_720If you somehow haven’t caught psych rockers Holy Wave somewhere about town, then it’s time you sit on down and got up close and personal. The best way to do that is to watch this video that the band just premiered below for the track, “California Took My Bobby Away” which features what appears to be a night out on Dirty Sixth. The track is a hazy blurof psychedelic rock in the best kind of way. Their new LP, Freaks of Nurture, will be out March 11th via The Reverberation Appreciation Society. Preorder it here.

ATX Spotlight: New Holy Wave EP

hwaveIt’s been a fairly solid couple of years for Austin’s Holy Wave, and while we’re still enjoying the remnants of listening to Relax, it seems the band are ready to best that effort. They’ve just tossed up a brand new song from their forthcoming EP, and while it still holds true to some of the band’s psychedelic influences, this might be the most pop-centric track to date. I love the bounce of the track, emphasized by the pounding drums and the way the guitar chords ring out. It doesn’t hurt one bit that these are some of the best harmonies the group have brought to a recording, surely warranting a thorough listen to their work. Look for The Evil Has Landed II, their newest EP, this week, and get your head around the fact that the band will hopefully have a brand new LP in 2016.

Show Preview: Nightlands @ Mohawk (12.3)

Nightlands

Date Tuesday, December 3rd
Location Mohawk
Doors 9:00 PM
Tickets $8 from Mohawk

Winter weather unfortunately puts a damper on bands traveling into Austin to put their music on display, but there’s a few great acts coming in, like Nightlands blowing into town on Tuesday night. The group is still pushing the sounds off their most recent release, Oak Island, which was well-received across the board.  I’ve always appreciated the way the project incorporates these organic sounds into these dreamscapes that mesmerize listeners.  And if that wasn’t enough, locals Holy Wave and RF Shannon will be supporting on the night.  It’s cheap, it’ll be good, you’ve got no choice: be there.

Show Review: Crystal Stilts @ Red 7 (10.24)

Having followed Crystal Stilts since their inception, including their involvement with Cinema Red and Blue, it’s surprising that I hadn’t caught the band live yet.  But, Thursday night was going to change that, and my anticipation was riding high, after absorbing more and more of the group’s recent album, Nature Noir

Read on for my highlights on the night, including photos from Brian Gray.

Show Review: Ty Segall @ The Mohawk (8/27)

Ty Segall may as well just move to Austin and live at the condos across the street from The Mohawk. It would shorten his commute. Why do all that touring? I have a feeling, plenty of fans would be fine with it.

Ty is supporting his latest effort, a solo record called Sleeper that is a bit of a surprise to many fans. As you can read in Nathan’s review, the album has Ty picking up the acoustic guitar for a good majority of the songs, a first for some time. I have gotten used to going to Ty Segall Band shows and bracing my ribs for the inevitable crowd crush that would happen behind me while snapping a few pics. But how would the faithful react to this more personal side of Ty playing Sleeper in its entirety?

Read on for more thoughts on Ty and the openers Hidden Ritual and Holy Wave with plenty of pics…

Ty Segall

Date Tuesday, August 27th
Location Mohawk
Doors 6:30
Tickets $12 from Transmission

Well, it seems like he was just here, but now that Ty Segall has released the most excellent Sleeper, he wants to play all those tracks for you.  It might make for a completely different show, as there’s a softer side to the record, which I raved about last week. You should probably buy tickets as soon as you see this; his shows usually sell out.  He’ll be accompanied by Holy Wave and Hidden Ritual…two local acts that always deserve your attention and support.  For those use to Ty’s walls of noise, let’s all go see how he offers the more subdued to the crowd; I’m sure he’ll win us all over regardless.
