It’s been a long time coming for Corey Baum and his posse, aka Croy and the Boys. Finally, their new album is ready for the masses, and it sounds as great as we’ve all expected it would. Their brand new single holds true to the Texas country tradition, but they’ve textured the track to make it more than just a run of the mill piece; there are layered guitars and a walking bit of keys. Honestly, it sounds like a cross between Wilco and Lucero, with hints of the Texan attitude Baum has inherited since moving to our state. The band have titled the album, Hey Come Back, and they’re celebrating it’s release over at Hotel Vegas this Saturday.
If you’re living in Austin, you might be tired of that old “Austin music is dying” retort; I know I am. So how do we stop it? You go out on Thursday and support local bands! Tonight you can catch Carl Sagan’s Skate Shoes headlining over at Vegas, fresh off the release of their excellent self-titled LP. Plus, help put a little money in the pocket of Vampyre, who are about to head out on the road, which is the hardest part for Austin acts sometimes. Oh, and did you know Foreign Mothers have been back at the live rock lately? Well, they are…and they play on this bill tonight. All kick started by the fire burning of Sherman’s March. So come out to Hotel Vegas tonight…show starts at 10 PM.
**There’s also word that a tour-only cassette will be available at tonight’s show!
Seems like a no brainer to me. It’s Wednesday, you’ve been locked in the house hiding from rising water, but the skies look to give us a break tonight, which means, you should grab your friends and go out. So why not enjoy the show over at Hotel Vegas that includes perennial Austin powerhouse, John Wesley Coleman. He’s the songwriter everyone loves, and he’s the one you deserve. Plus, our own Plantation Band will be opening the set, offering up their dark take on country vibes. And, to top it off, you get a nice little bit of non-local music via Vancouver’s Ballantynes. Go out tonight, go to this show.
You’re all in luck this Friday…tons of shows going on around about town. One of the one’s I’ve got on my radar has OMNI on the bill, who released one of my favorite LPs this year, Deluxe. They’ve got a little bit of proto-punk, spun in their own fashion; I couldn’t find a bad song on the record. But, don’t just let that be reason alone to attend, as two opener’s will also be celebrating the release of their new LPs via 12XU Records: Manhunt and Meet Your Death. This is one of those shows where you show up early, get settled in, then walk out with a handful of great records and fond memories of good old rock n’ roll. See you there! Sample a few tracks below.
First, this show is all about welcoming back A. Sinclair after their tour; it’s always good to show up and say hi to old friends, buy them a beer before they crash into that post-tour darkened den of sleep for a few weeks. Plus, if you come out early, like a music fan, you can catch Mean Jolene, who will be releasing their debut LP later this year via ATH Records (that’s us!). But, one thing people might be sleeping on in the presence of Tedo Stone of Atlanta, who garnered a lot of great press from the like heavy hitters with their album Marshes last year. Oh, and secretly hiding their all along is Star Parks, who’ve released one of my favorite LPs in Austin this year. It’s going to be cheap, and its going to be fun, and the weather will be cool enough to actually enjoy the great Hotel Vegas patio. See you tonight.
Long ago, Austin act Brothers and Sisters made huge waves in town…and while they’re sorely missed, songwriter Will Courtney hasn’t stopped writing music. He’s got a brand new record coming out this week, and I thought you should put it up on your radar, just in case you needed some great new music to enjoy. The new record is titled Planning Escapes, and while the record isn’t officially out until July 15th, you can catch his release show at Hotel Vegas this Friday with Wes Coleman and JD Clark. Listening to this single, I forgot how much I missed his voice. Those of you looking for a classic indie rock sound with a passionate singer behind it need look no further than the song below.

Our city is awesome, and we already knew that, but with each additional discovery of yet another solid band, or the reemergence of a band who has been around for a bit, my trust in Austin grows a bit. Paperback, a four piece indie-punk band, are one of those bands making their reemergence to the scene. They’ve got a new EP coming out this Sunday, and it’s bound to be a treat, as you can preview with the track I’ve included below called, “Laughing.” It’s got a nice little bite in the guitars, and the vocals are textbook pop-punk.
They’re playing Hotel Vegas this Sunday to celebrate the release ofNervous Energy. Take a listen to a track below and then head over there and show some love and hear the rest of it.
Midweek Show? Why not. There’ s a bunch on the bill this week…some local, some travelers. Hotel Vegas has Growl and Que Pasa, but I’d also like to point out that Winter is coming in from Cali…and that band was incredible during SXSW (Show starts at 10). Or, you can head on out over to Spiderhouse for a slew of great acts…Sailor Poon, Lunar Gold, Bloody Knives; it’s a night of great local acts that you should already have on your radar (Show starts at 7). Also, those of you looking for something a little different might want to see Nic Armstrong and the Thieves doing their thing at Hole in the Wall (Show starts at (9:30). I’ll toss out some jams below to give you some insight as to where you might want to go tomorrow night.
I’m gearing up to go to as many great shows as I can this week, and it all starts this evening. Austinites have the chance to see tons of stuff, but tonight, here’s where you should be: Beerland or Hotel Vegas. Beerland will host the Video album release for the group’s new record…kicking off at 9 PM. Vegas has Nick Allison kicking off his tour with our friends Lochness Mobsters, as well as Lung Letters. Seems like Wednesday is destined for rock n’ roll. Stream tracks below and see what suits your fancy…regardless, you’ll be happy at either of these spots.
