Playful Pop From Martian Subculture

It is yet another hot as hell day here in Austin, TX and I have yet another tune to hopefully brighten and soothe your incoming heat stroke. This new track of (ending) summer is called “All Emotions Are Equal” and comes by way of Limerick based outfit Martian Subculture. The man behind the music, Evan O’Malley, has a very Tame Impala way of doing things having record all of the musical parts on his own. What differs for me, and what I enjoy much more about this than TI, is O’Malley’s ability to create a super catchy, short pop ditty without all that disco influence. As things go, I am expecting we will all be hearing a lot more from this project in the future.

Smooth Pop Number from Eoin Dolan

You’ve got to slide nice and slow into a Wednesday, and I think this Eoin Dolan tack will do just the trick. It begins in a sort of spaced-out weirdness, though that all changes the instant Dolan sets his vocals into play. His deliver has slight hints of tropicalia mixed with a tinge of crooner; it sounds an awful lot like Dent May if he decided to get just a little weirder. The Irish songwriter has new music coming your way via 4 track EP that’s scheduled to drop on August 24th via Citog Records.

New Pop from Eoin Dolan

To be fair, I hadn’t really heard of Eoin Dolan, but since he passed me his new record last week, I’ve been spending a lot of time with it. While it’s easily defined as pop music, I’m finding it rather difficult to really pen down like-minded acts…perhaps early Ariel Pink or Mac Demarco, or maybe some of Alex G’s early home recordings. There are some really beautiful moments like “Forgotten Star,” featuring Dolan’s soaring vocal prowess, but also some wobbly pop moments like “Ella.” Anyways, Ubique is a rewarding listen from the get-go, so do yourself a favor and spend a little time here today.

Check This New Shrug Life Tune

Irish act Shrug Life have been at it for some time, though they’re just now getting around to dropping their debut full-length. Today they drop their jagged pop number “First World Problems,” a playful discussion on the trappings of modern day living. Energetic and catchy at once, it’s hard to see anyone not enjoying themselves while blasting this through their speakers. You’ll hear remnants of Weezer with a sharper edge, and whole lot of nerdiness. Turn up and tune in; they’ll release their debut on September 29th via Jigsaw Records and Little L.

Pure Joy from No Monster Club

That sort, like this new No Monster Club, doesn’t ask that you put it carefully in a box; instead, it begs you let your walls down and immerse yourself in pure enjoyment. For starters, you won’t find this new tune as your regular run-of-the-mill sort, so that’s already a bonus. Ultimately, you’re just going to leave your listening experience with a smile upon your face and enough inner joy to carry you through the rest of your day. Buy This Debutantes 7″ from Emotional Response

11020761_10153147013484577_8079677916334810216_nThe two sides of this new 7″ from the Debutantes are pretty brilliant, yet completely distinct in their respective sounds. The A Side “Adams Apples” is the punishing bit of noise rock with an underlying current of pop sensibility, and very likely to break through your speakers…in a really good way.  The flip side has “Kids,” which is a much softer look at the Irish act. This song stays true to the historical undercurrent of indiepop, though the recording has this endearing distortion to it, so as not to be too shimmering.  The 7″ just came out from the really awesome folks over at Emotional Response, so you can grab yourself a copy of it right HERE. Oh, and if you order it now, it comes with a 4 song download that makes up the band’s debut EP.

So Cow Sign with Goner Recrods

cowsI’m so stoked for the Irish lads in So Cow; I’ve been listening to the group for several years, and they never seemed to quite make headway in the US…until news came yesterday that they’d signed with Goner Records.  Their new single has this jerky guitar line that moves in and out of the tune, pumping the distortion during the chorus.  They’ve always been catchy, but they walk this fine line of power-pop cum garage rock; it’s all illustrated in this single.  Their album, The Long Con, will be released on September 16th, but if you’re liking what you hear, check out Meaningless Friendly, my personal favorite.

Bouncing Power Pop from The Number Ones

1s-coverDammit if I didn’t find one of my favorite tracks of the month just before we blast off into June.  You might ask why something so simple meets my requirements; it’s precisely that.  This new single operates between the realm of pop and punk rock, and it’s executed perfectly. There’s some catchy “you-ooh-oohs” thrown in, just in case you need to sing along at the top of your lungs.  It puts this Irish group at the top of my list for acts I’m most excited about in 2014; you can grab The Number Ones self-titled record on August 5th from Deranged Records.

SXSW 2014 Interview: September Girls
