Austin Leonard Jones Shares Demon Sands, Drops Dead Calm

The latest album from Austin Leonard Jones very much feels like a Texas affair, from production duties helmed by Jesse Woods to Shane Renfro and others aiding in the recording. But, the album, itself feels like a Texas album. Take this two little ditty, for instance: it feels like you’re stepping out onto the dusty dancefloor with your partner nestled on your shoulder, ready for that slow jam that closes out the night. The twang, the longing are omnipresent here, but really, there are these slight little vocal moments throughout that warm me, like the slight voice rise at 1:07; it’s subtle, but the more you listen, the more you’re won over. If you dig it, then be sure to check out Dead Calm, the recent record out now courtesy of Perpetual Doom.

RF Shannon Album Release Party Tonight @ Ch’ups

It’s a fairly busy Wednesday night over in Austin city limits…the likes of Half Waif, Vagabon and Kenny Chesney, but why not go local? There’s a great release show for RF Shannon happening over at Cheer Up Charlies this evening. The group just released Trickster Blues, which in my opinion has some of the best songs they’ve crafted, but you have to get there early as there are other perennial ATH faves taking the stage. Diamond Center always puts on an enjoyable set, and Jesse Woods is bound to bring his balladry to the Cheer Ups stage. Doors open at 9, and the place will fill up quick, so be there early!

Top 15 Austin Albums of 2013

Local Albums 2tMan. Austin had a pretty incredible year; it was a far better year than I’ve encountered recently, making my ears, mind and heart quite proud of our hometown.  While it’s obviously difficult to get in on every single band in Austin, I made a list of the albums that were most impactful throughout the year, 2013.  I purposefully left off EPs and singles, not because I didn’t enjoy those, but because this is a list of top ALBUMS!  I’m sorry to those we left off, and encourage you all to send us your music as we continue our push to be a great voice for Austin music.  Without further ado…this is how we do it.  Read more

Haunting Folk Themed Tune From Jesse Woods

81385df9d5007ab135be1d818d1c99047cc0fc21Singer/Songwriter Jesse Woods took a very unique road on his path to becoming a musician.  His story tells us that he hails from Katy, TX, played some college football at Texas A&M (boo), suffered one too many injuries, and decided to pick up a guitar.  Lucky for us, the music currently being created by Jesse is some of the most heartfelt and almost haunting songwriter music I’ve heard in quite some time.  I’d liken him to guys like JBM or a darker version of Tallest Man on Earth.  Anyone who reads this blog knows that those are two of my own personal favorites.  Check out new song “Lazerburn” below and let us know what ya think.

Debut album Get Your Burdens Lifted will be out on August 6th via Guns in the Sun.

Good luck….and if you don’t win, you can still go check out great Austin music.

New Tunes From Good Field

It’s new band hype time here at ATH, and today we’re here to build some hype for newish Austin band Good Field.  The band has an impressive resume featuring former members of Brazos, The Early Tapes, and even local legends Voxtrot.  Paul Price originally started the band as a solo project but has since expanding to enlist the help of several friends and putting together a 4 track EP (Said EP is actually available to stream for free on the band’s website). At their core, the band is a shoegaze pop group, but they also offer a bit more with catchy hooks that can’t be denied.

Also of note, the band has an album release show planned for Saturday at Baby Blue Recording Studio with Jesse Woods and Sleep Good both offering support.  Doors are at 8pm for that one.  $5 cover and free keg beer.
