Show Pics: Animal Collective @ Emo’s (4/30)

Animal Collective 16When ACL cancelled a day of the festival a few years back, we were flooded by a series of pop-up shows to keep visiting artists busy. When the press release landed cancelling the entire festival, I emailed Team ATH to keep an eye out and put an ear to the street. One of the first big acts to land a venue was Animal Collective. The show at Emo’s sold out in two minutes. In fact, most pop-up shows sold out in a ridiculously short time, but I think this one was the fastest by far.

If you were at Scoot Inn or Hotel Vegas, get ready for notes and pics from the big show that featured Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith as the open…

More from New Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith

kaitlIt’s always introducing to hear what Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith comes up with when she sits down to work. A great deal of her efforts have been electronic masterpieces, based mostly on instrumental pieces…this new single has a different feel to it. Her construction is quite similar, but adding vocals to the layered mixture makes me recall some of the denser tracks from The Knife. It takes an already interesting songwriting process to the next level, and I can’t wait to hear the entirety of Ears when it’s released on April 1st by Western Vinyl. She’ll also be making her way to Austin for this year’s Levitation Fest.

Layered Track from Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith

kaitlWhile I don’t generally gravitate to instrumental tunes, I have always found the music of Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith rather intoxicating. There’s something about the way that she builds the layers on her songs, much as she does here, barely trickling in, then adding various textures. Her music ends up sounding other-worldly, perhaps as a time-capsule piece we’d send out into space to make friends beyond our solar system. Her new album EARS will surely build upon her blossoming sound (and career); it’s being released by Western Vinyl on April 1st.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith: Check It

katyIt’s really difficult to create something mesmerizing when you’re limiting yourself to the use of one instrument, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith.  Her new effort, Euclid, has her spending studio hours working with a Buchla Music Easel synthesizer, throwing in really light touches of vocals in the distance.  That being said, this track’s more than just your average affair, showing an artist working to craft her own genre altogether.  For me, those little vocal moments really make the song something special, utilizing the gift of voice as another instrument in her textural work.  Look for the new record on January 20th via Western Vinyl.
