Marfa Myths Announces Lineup Additions, Shares Schedule

It’s getting to be spring festival season, and with warmer temperatures and longer days on the horizon, one of the leaders of the pack in terms of quirky, yet cool lineups is none other than Marfa Myths. This year’s fest will be taking place April 25-28, and while they’ve already shared a slew of great bands well worthy of the trip out to nowhere, Texas, they’ve given you yet another list of reasons to get the heck outta town for a weekend at the end of April. In addition to giants like Deerhunter, Khruangbin, Cass McCombs, Tim Hecker, Jess Williamson(amongst many more), they’ve also added Jerry Paper, Makaya McCraven,Josey Rebelle,Jess Sah Bi and Pete One to the bill. Head over to their website to scoop your tickets, plan your schedules and start making arrangements to get out to Marfa, Texas come end of April. It’s bound to be a culturally rich and weird festival that will make you hate going to other festivals…did we mention the art exhibitions that will also be there?

Show Review: Khruangbin + The Mattson 2 @ The Mohawk (3.30.18)

Aside from the inevitable grooves, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the Khruangbin show at Mohawk on Friday night, afterwards it became very clear. It was my first time to see the trio live and here’s my three main takeaways: 1.) Nobody is still quite sure how to pronounce the name…and just forget spelling it correctly, 2.) That 70’s inspired psych jams from Southeast Asia and the Middle East can induce a dance party in ATX for the ages, 3.) That something with roots so strikingly foreign to Texas (and even today’s stateside music scene in general) can come across as spellbindingly authentic. All that and more after the jump. Read more

Show Pics: Tycho @ Stubb’s (5/12)

Last Friday was an insanely busy night in Austin. While Nathan camped out with Team ATH bands over at Hotel Vegas, I was taking in a full set from Tycho at Stubb’s.

It has been a big year for Scott Hansen. He started the Tycho project as an aside to his graphic design (check it out at ISO50.com). The live shows have featured projections of his art as an element of the performance. To the credit of that graphic design, I sometimes “see” the design language when spacing out listening to the records. The latest album, Epoch, was Grammy-nominated for Best Dance/Electronic Album. That had to be a rad feeling, and a bit odd given how much of the record is not electronic or dance. The Austin show was the end of the tour, so we were treated with an extended set of lesser played songs after an intermission following the normal show.

Anyway, you can relive the night with photos of Tycho and openers Khruangbin along with some more words and even get a few bonus shots of our friends Tres Oui at Beerland. Deal?

Khruangbin Bring Sunday Afternoon Vibes To Your Tuesday

856831_514421658654910_1422536429_oIt’s Tuesday, so you’re probably having weekend withdrawals like me, but not to worry, as this band with a name I have no earthly idea how to pronounce, has got us all covered. Khruangbin, hailing from Houston, Texas, make chill ‘thai-funk’ music, but “White Gloves,” to me sounds like a mix of smooth jazz and indie rock. The drums are jazzy, mostly there to keep the tune alive, while there are some other percussive counterparts that join in later. Guitar wanders through the laid back track and so do the vocals, making it the perfect song for you to channel those easy weekend vibes on this Tuesday.
