New Rock n Roll From Kinski

Sometimes I don’t get enough credit around here for liking to rock just as much as everyone else.  Sure I tend to have tastes that jump all over the place, but I also can appreciate a great rock n roll number when I hear one.  This new song “Conflict Free Diamonds” from underrated veteran rock outfit Kinski is definitely worthy of receiving that great rock song tag.  Me gusta mucho.

After a long 6 year delay, the band have a new album entitled Cosy Moments due out April 2nd via Kill Rock Stars.

New Single from Forbidden Friends (Hutch of the Thermals)

As a long time fan of the Thermals, I’ll always be dedicated to anything that’s associated with the band.  Luckily for me, and for you as well, Hutch never really writes a bad song.  His new solo project, Forbidden Friends just released a the new Totally Low 7″ on Kill Rock Stars, and it’s been playing on my turntable all night long.  It might not have the sharp edge of the Thermals, but you can hear the backbone in there.  His voice is always has a special place in my heart, which is perhaps the reason why I’m so attracted to the simplicity he’s revealed with this new project.  Go get your hands on the single today!

More New Music From Milagres

After sharing new track “Glowing Mouth” a couple weeks ago, we have another new song from Milagres off their upcoming album.  This new song “Here to Stay” is another electro-pop jam that’s catchy enough for your summer pool party or your drive across the U.S.  As previously mentioned, the new album from Milagres Glowing Mouth will be available on September 13th from Kill Rock Stars.

New Song from Milagres

The hit making city has struck again! Brooklyn churns out more than its share of music, and Milagres is one of those bands that has slowly been on the rise; they’re ready to go beyond the city though.  They’ve just signed on with Kill Rock Stars who will be releasing their record, Glowing Mouth, at some point in September.  The first single, the album’s title track, has this electronic vibe to it, but what really grabs me, and hopefully you as well, is the way the vocals come across; they seem to be manipulated so carefully, showing perfect control in both pitch and tone.  I’ve just been replaying this all afternoon, so I figured you folks out there would enjoy it as well.

New Tunes from The Thermals

Now that they have a full-time drummer, it’s like The Thermals can’t be stopped. They put out a great record last year, and now news comes that their newest record, Personal Life, will hit stores September 7th via Kill Rock Stars.  We won’t complain, as we love this band.  The latest single is quick, catchy and not short on the fun, so hopefully you’ll find it beneficial to the doldrums of a slow Tuesday.  If not, at least you have new tunes from this great band.

New Music From Horse Feathers

Yesterday The Gum premiered this new track “Belly of June” from a favorite band of mine Horse Feathers.  The new track will appear on the band’s upcoming 3rd album Thistled Spring due out April 20th on Kill Rock Stars.  You’ll notice the familiar indie-folk sound complimented by the haunting voice of leading man Justin Ringle.  He’s got some of the best and most unique pipes in the genre.

Thao With the Get Down Stay Downs – Know Better Learn Faster

thao---know-better-learn-faRating: ★★★★☆

Prior to listening to Thao with the Get Down Stay Down’s new album, Know Better Learn Faster (Kill Rock Stars), I knew absolutely nothing of Thao Nguyen or her band.  Boy, am I glad that has been remedied!  Know Better Learn Faster has got to be one of the most pleasant listening experiences I have had in some time.

Those who have met me know that I am not drawn to dance parties or music played at dance parties, but I have to tell you, Nguyen has crafted a tight and whimsical long player that is essentially a dance party on a five inch piece of plastic (or a twelve inch slab of vinyl, depending on your tastes).  Starting with rowdy hand clapping and foot stomping of ‘The Clap’ you are transported to a sweaty living room filled with pulsating bodies.  The thirteen tracks on this album are sweet and sexy and just plain fun.

The influences on this album tend to shift from song to song, which would normally irritate me, but somehow on Know Better Learn Faster, it works.  The music goes from Minus the Bear to Andrew Bird to No Kill No Beep Beep era Q and Not U sometimes in the same song (see the title track).  Nguyen’s vocals are a little harder to pinpoint.  They are at time reminiscent of Nico, Rebecca Pearcy, or Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney, which are all really good things!

I have a hard time finding something  bad to say about Thao and the Get Down Stay DownKnow Better Learn Faster is perfect for the changing seasons; it will continue to bring sunshine into these dreary Fall months.
