We gotta start off our week looking back at last week. We’ve got 19 great songs to enjoy on your end of things, including a tune from Quivers who shared with us a delicious pudding recipe, plus talked about their latest LP Golden Doubt. Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton Announce New Album

Two of my favorite songwriters have teamed up once again! Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton (Pop Filter) have reunited for another record, which based on the first single, will likely be filled with charming pop numbers you’ll play time and time again. We open here with this jangling piano line, something akin to a classic rock feel with Lachlan narrating the storyline. Quickly, guitars begin to ring a bit more, there’s a swell and suddenly Emma joins in to lift the song’s spiritual connection. The song travels back to another verse/chorus before the rest of their friends join in the fun to “take solace” in the togetherness. They’ve titled the new record Something is Going to Change Tomorrow, Today. What Will You Do? What Will You Say, and its out on October 8th via the always reliable Bobo Integral/Spunk Records/Osborne Again.

Partner Look Drop New 7″

Oddly, I think I just now realized that Tuesday’s in Australia are still release days (I think?); we used to do that in the States until it seemed more fun to use corporate Fridays. Alas, today you can stream (and buy!) the brand new 7″ from Partner Look, featuring members of Cool Sounds/Pop Filter. The A-side has this deliciously infectious stabbing guitar riff that punctuate Anila’s vocals as they try to match the drum beat; the chorus opens up into a more dreamy affair, building in these group harmonies that are certain to share their charms…particularly when the harmonies are interrupted by the yelping vocal from the background…as if two-like minded souls were having an argument. Flip it over and you’ve got a more steadying indie rock feel, pretend Parquet Courts just got really really stoned, only you get a hipper vocal from Dainis. Again, you get a great chorus, ultimately making things as memorable as anything you’ll hear today. The 7″ is available today via I Heard a Whisper.

Pop Filter Share Big Yellow Van

While Pop Filter might be a new incarnation, the band’s members have been writing songs together for quite some time. One of the core songwriters, and is Lachlan Denton, whose voice always feels like home to me, whether its in the song he penned below, his solo work or his various other projects (with Emma Russack for one). Little keyboard stabs flesh out the tune from the start, building in some ambiance while the drums right the ship and the Denton stretches his voice across so perfectly. I love the crisps notes of the guitar; you can almost hear the warmth of the strings as they vibrate sound. The outfit will release their debut Banksia in August of this year!

Top 25 Albums of 2019

This is the list you’ve all been waiting for, well, sort of. This is my Top 20 LPs of the year. Admittedly, there’s none of the high profile hitmakers on here, but that’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy those albums. I loved Purple Mountains just as much as the next person, same with Weyes Blood, but in a pickle, would I choose it over that Martha LP? Uh, absolutely not. Plus, I ran a lot this year because I got tired of being fat, so the majority of this stuff is pretty upbeat and “runnable.” There’s no order because all are equal under my ears.

Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton Share New Single

Two of my favorite voices from Australia, Emma Russack and Lachlan Denton, are teaming up again to release their 3rd album working together; they’ve both released wonderful solo records this year as well. In this video, the duo seem to be having a dinner party, built around the making of pasta with a bunch of pals. Emma takes the reins on the vocal duties for this number, with slight backing vocals provided during the chorus. The subject matter here involves self-love, and the inevitable drive to get out of bed and seek it out. Their new album is titled Take the Reigns, and it will be released by Osborne Again/Bobo Integral on October 18th.

Lachlan Denton Shares New Tune

Lachlan Denton and his brother Zac were part of my favorite Aussie outfit, The Ocean Party, with each working on their own side-projects along the way. But, as many of you know, Zac passed away suddenly last year, leaving a lasting impression on all of us. Now, with a new tune from Lachlan Denton & Studio Magic, we hear Lachlan coming to grips with the impression Zac left on his own life. It’s creates a strange contradiction whilst listening: the song is beautiful and yet the lyrical content is heartbreaking…still, you’re captivated by both aspects, perhaps the lasting mark that will remain with listeners as they absorb A Brother, the new LP out next week via Bobo Integral/Osborne Again.

Lachlan Denton & Studio Magic Share “The Time We Had”

Lachlan Denton is nearing the release of his upcoming LP, A Brother, which is a tribute to his lost brother, Zac, of The Ocean Party. From that record, he’s released the video for the track, “The Time We Had,” which is a beautiful and twinkling soft rock tune that looks back on lost time with fondness. It’s ultimately a track about holding a memory strongly in your heart and using that memory as fuel to press on in your day to day life. Denton sings “The time we had is worth more than anything / Far greater than its length / And for that it’s you I thank.” This track is a powerful one, layers of meandering guitars, delicate synth swells, soft percussion and poignant and wistful lyrics. Take a listen and then pre-order A Brother here before it’s out on July 2.

 

Lachlan Denton Shares This Christmas

When Lachlan Denton lost his brother Zac (of Ocean Party fame) unexpectedly last year, he was overtaken by emotion; he did what he and his brother had been doing for a long long time…he penned some tunes to try and write his emotions out into the world. The first tune we’ve heard from the LP is “This Christmas,” which has me pretty damn near close to tears. In the lyrics you’ve got a brother promising to keep his brother’s memory alive, though that promise comes with the knowledge that those memories will also bring sadness. Musically, there’s this wonderfully gleaming guitar line; it twinkles and sparkles in the front of the mix, much like Zac when he was fronting OP. A Brother will be out on July 19th via Osborne Again/Spunk/Bobo Integral.

Lachlan Denton Keeps Writing Songs

Lachlan Denton has to be one of the most prolific songwriters this year. He’s already released one album with his friend Emma Russack; he’s got a new record coming our way with The Ocean Party…and now he’s let us know he’s got a solo effort coming out at the beginning of June. This first single is fairly relaxed, with Lach working his voice over careful guitar work; I’ve always loved his voice, so you win right away here. Just after the 1 minute mark a simple drum line enters, adding an extra layer to the track; still, the warmth of his voice carries on, aided by a comforting backing vocal from an unnamed friend. Osborne Again Music will release Two Months in Ben Woolley’s Room on June 1st.
