Late Night Pop Number from Das Kope

I’ve already been impressed by the work of Brazilian (now LA-based) songwriter Das Kope, and I’m really glad he’s returned so quickly with another tune. This number is a little bit more of a sultry late night pop number; there’s a funky little guitar line that gives you a toe-tapping groove, while the vocal wash is coated in this hazy vibe…perhaps alluding to the smog of LAX. Still no word on when, and if, we’ll get a formal release from the producer, but if he’s still throwing out hits like the one below, I’m on board.

Go to Andrew Fest (12.19 & 12.20)

andrewAndrew Collins has been a musician in the Austin scene for some time, most recently playing with LAX.  Unfortunately, tragedy struck Andrew earlier this year, leaving him with some expensive  bills to pay.  But, like Austin does, the community has banded together to throw Andrew Fest, a two-day benefit featuring great acts like Sip Sip, Wild Child and BLXPLTN.  They’re even bringing some of Andrew’s old friends out of the woodworks to reunite for the cause, namely Visitors and The Rise.  You can grab tickets HERE, and all the funds go to support the cause.  Plus, there will be lots of prizes and raffles courtesy of tons of great local folks.  If you can’t make it, consider helping out by donating HERE.

A2W: FreshMillions!

We spend a lot of our time focusing on the rock around Austin, but rest assured, we love to shake it just as much as the next guy does.  Recently, the Austin scene has been boosted by the rise of FreshMillions! , and their main guy Geoff Earle.  They’ve been hitting the town with the likes of Focus Group and L.A.X. (who they will be supporting May 19th), making a name for themselves with electrifying shows that leave the audience drenched in sweat and coated in euphoria.  Not to mention that a lot of people love the fact that Bryan Ritchie of The Sword (and Skate or Die) helped produce the record, but as much as we love Bryan, you have to know that those groove-tastic bass lines and electric shine were all there beforehand.  Be sure to check out the band’s self-titled debut record, and attend one of their live shows because pretty soon, the whole town will be aboard this dance-a-riffic party bus of fun.

New Tunes from L.A.X.

For some time local Austin band, L.A.X. have been devoted to making people dance their butts off, including those that caught their energetic set at ACL last year.  Things are looking up for this group, and they’re set to release a new EP, titled the A EP, which will officially see its release at their show on May 20th over at the Parish.  Be sure to catch on to these guys now, and at the very least, you’ll have something sweet to dance to while at work.

While we may not have been too crazy about his new album, Four Tet should still put on a solid live show at Mohawk on Saturday night.  The electro mastermind will be joined on the stage by Nathan Fake.  Stick around after the headlining set outside and head inside for sets by L.A.X. and Many Birthdays.

FTC: The Impossibles

impossiblesAs I thought about this year’s best Austin albums (which comes out next week folks), I came across an ancient video of one of my favorite local bands, The Impossibles. Growing up in Austin, I had the pleasure of singing along with this band at least once a month.  Sure, I didn’t know everyone there, but I felt as if they were all my friends.  We screamed, we threw up our hands in unison, and yes, we skanked a little bit, or a whole lot, depending upon your dedication and conditioning.  The guys in this band went on to play parts in Mineral and LAX (lets not forget Slowreader).   It was a time of youth and innocence, and The Impossibles were the perfect blend of both.  Let’s travel down memory lane together.
