So that time of the year is fast approaching here in Austin: ACL season! With this slight break in the blistering heat I’ve been dreaming of our near future frolicking in field of Zilker Park and it’s only good and proper that we begin our pre-fest coverage now so you’re adequately prepared to bounce around from stage to stage with your well tuned and highlighted game plan. Schedule conflicts be damned, we’re here to help you make the most of your weekend(s), and that starts with Leon Bridges.

With SXSW this year there was lots of hubbub about fewer bands and less corporate entities flooding the streets, but despite all that, I still managed to have myself a good old time. I’ve got some thoughts and awards to hand out, and these are strictly my experience, as we tried at ATH to split up and cover as much as we possibly could. You can read on, if you’ve got the time, to see what I had to say. Read more
It’s no secret that we’re smitten with Fort Worth act, Leon Bridges, whose career seems to be just at the cusp of really taking off; each song he’s put out so far has me a little bit more in love. He’s got a new track to share with you about his mother, titled “Lisa Sawyer” which has enough smoothness to maybe last you the rest of the year. It’s a slow jam that combines glorious storytelling with Leon’s soulful vocals as well some killer saxophone. Take a listen and get swept away by this easy groove.
It’s a really good weekend for shows, and it’s good to see the scene heating back up after the Winter seasonings. Friday night is sure to be the highlight of the weekend, but look to some other rad shows you can attend about town. These are just a few of my suggestions, so if you’re not feeling what I’m into, feel free to look up your own gig to attend. Also…it’s clear Leon Bridges is blowing up. Read more
No lie. I would have no idea about Leon Bridges if it weren’t for my friend at GvsB, who turned me onto the sweet sounds of the Ft. Worth songwriter. Sure, it doesn’t fit into the modern spin of all things indie, but I’m grateful for that; it’s a refreshing sound that I’ve not heard in some time. It’s a little bit Cody Chestnutt, but a whole lot more Stax. At the moment, there’s nothing quite like this being spun out there, making the voice and music of Bridges all the more powerful. Seriously, how can you not appreciate this?
