The first record we ever put out on ATH Records was in conjunction with our good friends over at Square of Opposition Records; it was with Literature, who were at the time, an Austin act, before moving off to Philly. That album, Arab Spring, has already gone through several presses, and we still have a few laying about, but more importantly, their new album has just been announced with Slumberland Records. The lead single is enough to show you why they’ve quietly built a huge name for themselves, just off the gifts of their songwriting. You’re going to want to pick up Chorus when it’s released on August 19th…and if you’re inclined, you can pick up their first LP HERE or HERE.

When I started ATH Records with my friend Mike, we had two rules: 1) Put out records we love 2) Work with people we love. We’ve stuck to that, in our opinion, but now the family of one of our bands, Young Girls, are going through a hard time. Guitarist Pete Tijerina’s brother has been diagnosed with cancer, and the costs are definitely not easy to deal with. So, since we love those guys, and they’re part of our family too, we’re going to donate 50% of all sales on ATH Records to support the Tijerina family at this time; we’ll be running this benefit for the next 3 weeks. You can buy the Young Girls EP, Literature LP or Grape St. LP, and help support their family. Listen to all the releases HERE and pick up one or more copies HERE. Thanks for helping us help our family.
You can also donate directly to the family HERE.
I swear this is my favorite time of the year. Not only are there tons of records coming out left and right, but a great deal of them come perfecting the mood of Spring. When I first put on this new track from Tijuana Panthers, I couldn’t help but tapping my feet, imagining myself dancing about my room at home; I did just that when I played this song. They also recall the perfect power-pop that our own favorite (and ATH Records alumni) Literature bring to the table. It’s pop music with no BS, just good songs. The band releases Wayne Interest, their new album, on June 6th via Innovative Leisure.

In case you didn’t know, we have a small little label here at the site. We’ve put out two great releases, and we have another in the works (featuring our first non-Austin band). Since it’s the holiday season, I figured I’d offer up a sweet deal to you folks. I’m calling this the ATH Records Holiday Pack, meaning you get the Grape St. A Date with You LP and the Literature Arab Spring LP together for $15. Basically that’s like buying one record, and getting another for 75% (plus S&H), or think of it as two great LPs for the price of one! You want your friends to have better tastes? Maybe your parents? Get them the Holiday Pack. I’ll take it down on the December 20th, but for now you can order HERE. You can have the songs below for free; it’s not about the money, it’s about the good music getting into your ears.

Ski Lodge seems to be riding the waves of praise from all over the place. First, they had the Internet buzz, then our friends Literature gave them the stamp of approval and we, of course, gave them our love after catching them over at Holy Mountain a few weeks back. They’ve finally locked down a firm date for the release of their album, Big Heart; it’s coming your way on August 20th via Dovecote Records. And, in honor of the announcement, they’re streaming another new track with it’s warm indie pop melodies and spirited guitar playing.

Here it is. I know you’ll hate it; I know you’ll disagree, but that’s not the point in making an arbitrary list. We here at ATH worked really hard to fit in the tastes of the four of us, and when we decided upon our Top 50, it really boied down to simple math. What albums did we love when they came out? Do we still enjoy spinning those records months later? If they’re in the Top 50, then the asnwer is probably yes. I mean, our Top 2 records came out in January, and still play a vital part in my weekly listening. There’s no disclaimer here. We are who we are, we like what we like, and we hope that’s okay with you. If not, drop us a line and let us know where we went wrong.
It’s that time of year folks, when we here at Austin Town Hall try to convince you that we know what’s what in the world of music. We’re starting things off with our list of Top Ten Austin Albums of 2012. We purposefully left out EPs, just focusing on the Album as a whole, since that’s our favorite form of media. Before you read this, please know that this is just the expressed OPINION of ours, and you’re definitely cool to disagree. Let us know your thoughts, and make sure your favorite Austin bands send us their hits in 2013!
You know we love raving about Literature, who’ve recently departed Austin for Philadelphia, so I’m happy to share with you the A-Side to their new Tie Dye 7″, which the band is putting out via Square of Opposition Records (it’s up for pre-order right now!). When the song starts off, it’s got that catchy jangle that made me love their sound, but what’s interesting is that as the song begins to fade out, they add a new layer to their sound. It’s a wayward sounding group harmony with just a bit of fuzz on it. Oh, and if you didn’t buy their debut Arab Spring, you need to get it HERE since I only have about 10 left!

Our boys in Literature have had a pretty solid year thus far, having released their debut Arab Spring LP with us earlier in the year. They’re back at it again with the new Tie Die 7″, which will come out via our partners for the LP, Square of Opposition Records. On the B-Side for the release you’ll notice that the urgency of the power pop the band used in the past has receded slightly, allowing for their melodies to take their time coming through the song. In what’s already been a banner year for the band, they continue writing great songs, maintaining their spot as one of our favorites. Oh, and if you haven’t bought their LP, you can still grab a few HERE.

Well, everyone else is doing it, so why don’t we? We’re going to toss out our top five albums of the year, except we’ll be doing it with our four main contributors, so hopefully that’ll mix things up a bit. Obviously, we’re only half-way through the year, so things are subject to change, and by things I mean our minds.
