Me Rex Share Never Graduate Single

You know when you just want something big and poppy, something that seems just perfectly built for you? Well, I present you with the new single from London’s Me Rex. If you’re into British pop rock like Martha, you’re going to want to spend some time here; you might also want to go back and revisit the band’s other releases. Here, we get a little synth into before the song hits hyperdrive into euphoria…backing vocals swell with these magical hooks that dig deep into your soul. Myles McCabe has this great delivery within the confines of the song to kind of tie it all together; it comes across as spoken and call, straining when it hits the song’s rising tension. If you dig this, look for the band’s Pterodactyl EP in February of next year via Big Scary Monsters. Also, fun fact. Pterodactyls are not dinosaurs. Duh.

Jessica’s Brother Shares Caroline

In the associated press of the latest single from Jessica’s Brother, it states the this is the “sound of a band coming together and getting caught up in a rush starting afresh.” I love that, as you get the feeling that their second LP is going to have this urgency, this combination of their various influences fusing together to complete one musical entity. This new single has a bit of a nice little folk shimmy to it, like running and leaping through piles of leaves with a friend, grinning all the while. The fiddle work is the perfect accent to the band’s sound here, putting on those pastoral finishing touches to this campfire singalong. Their new LP is titled Just Rain, and it drops on November 26th via Fika Recordings.

Heavy Post-Punk From Talk Show

We are midway through the week and I can feel myself slowly sort of dragging myself along to get through the day to day work week. If you’re in the same sort of slog, might I suggest you check out this fast paced new tune called “Underworld” from London based post-punk outfit Talk Show. I love how the track has this overall tension that can, ever so slightly, explode in short bursts but never really completely lets go of that pent up energy.

Talk Show will be releasing this new track on an EP entitled Touch the Ground coming out in 2022.

Roaring New Single From On Video

East London based group On Video is a banging four piece who really made a name for themselves back in 2019 with their debut EP Clap Trap and extensive touring around the UK. Fast forwarding into 2021 and the band have released a few more singles with the latest, “He Is Me”, coming late in the day yesterday. If you are unfamiliar with the band, you’ll immediately love their explosive, raucous, and downright fun take on a sort of garage rock meets surf, meets punk style. Here’s to hoping to more from the band in the near future.

 

ME REX Share Heart of Garbage Video

I’ve really been enjoying this new track from ME REX, as the band seem to sort of resemble a strange blend between Martha and We Were Promised Jet Packs…though I’ll admit this outfit show a bit of restraint. The rhythm section definitely drives the song forward, pounding on the drums as the band kick forth, featuring feuding vocals that scream ambition and joyous reflection. If you’re digging this song, you’ll be happy to know that there’s a handful of others from the band’s Triceratops/Stegosaurus EP, which is currently available from Big Scary Monsters.

Paul Cook and the Chronicles Share Old Pursuit

Paul Cook is one of those songwriters that just keeps at it, switching gears, changing directions, clearly leaving you in awe of his craft. The London musician just dropped this brand new tune with his outfit Paul Cook & the Chronicles, and its driving home that pure classic pop rock sound, the sort you might hear coming from a classic set by the Oneders, or more recently, Brendan Benson when he was younger…not to mention a little Teenage Fanclub nod in there around the 2 minute mark. Hooks are abundant throughout, but if you’re not singing the chorus along with Paul by the end of this song, you clearly weren’t listening. Clearly this is prime Paul Cook, so let yourself sit back and enjoy good old pop rock n’ roll. The whole Old Pursuit EP is live today!

Hip New Tune From Attawalpa

Though you might not be familiar with the artist name Attawalpa, I am somewhat positive that you are aware of the man behind the name, Luis Felber, from his work as a guitarist for Jamie T or as a founding member of Young Turks Records. Know him or not, Felber is likely to become more of a household name if he continues to release memorable tunes like this one called “Please Take Care”. It sort of starts in this sultry, dark tone similar to something you might hear from Nick Cave, but then adds in these lovely little pop numbers to offer tons of catchy, soft pop moments. I suggest you check it out this afternoon.

This track will appear on a new EP entitled Patterns, due out on July 2nd.

Fresh Share Girl Clout

As Spring begins to roll out, I have this natural inclination towards hook-laden pop punk, a la Spook School or or Marth…and today, there’s a new tune from Fresh. The London outfit blast through this with furious speed and pounding rhythm, stylistically stepping in line with the aforementioned bands, both punchy and hook-laden. Lyrically, Kathryn Woods takes aim at the musical patriarchy and faux allies going through the motions, begging the men and music fans in general to be better. The song rips, and so do the words, so spend a little time letting the song tear through your speakers. It’s good for you.

Another Ski Saigon Tune

A bit back I was hoping to point your attention towards Ski Saigon‘s debut LP, coming out in a wee bit via Too Good to Be True Records. Today, we get another glimpse at the London outfits sound, this time with a keyboard drenched pop approach. Guitars and vocals are buried beneath that electronic wash, almost drowning in the darkened sensation. Still, as much as the song can sound dense and cavernous, the vocals come out like whispers rising above a crowded city center, the words staying as faint signs of future promise. That future promise is surely the group’s debut, Ski Saigon Sees the Albatraoss, dropping on March 4th.

What We’ve Been Listening To: Panic Pocket

Another event we had to cancel this year was our Words and Music At The Skep Festival we host in our barn. We had a great line-up of poets and musicians booked in for May, but obviously it never happened. We did a virtual mini-version of it on YouTube, which was fun, but not as fun as the real thing would have been. One of the bands we were most excited about seeing was Panic Pocket, a female duo (Selphie and Nat) from London. This is “Pizza In My Pants.” – Amelia
