There’s a great show going down tomorrow evening over at Cheer Up Charlies, which gives us the opportunity to drop this live video from Belcurve, who are one of several acts playing the venue. The video is the perfect portrayal of the band’s power, with Sarah Castro’s distinctive vocals dominating the front of the mix…clearly she’s got some range in those pipes! It’s a pretty strong performance from the rest of the band as well, crashing in unison to meet the rise and fall of Castro’s pitch-shifting.
You’ll be able to catch them at 11 on the Outside Stage, but be sure to show up early and stay late…the bill features The Reputations, Magic Rockers of TX, Loteria and our own Lochness Mobsters!
It’s Wednesday, your energy is back up from the weekend, so why not destroy it with a little rock n’ roll? Sure, there’s some other shows in town (Guitars Eat Bass Amps, Borrisokane), but there really is one place you can go for the best rock n’ roll time of your life. For one, The Shivas will be in town at Hotel Vegas. Their last 7″, with the track below, literally played every day on my stereo for two months…at least once a day, if not more. Plus, three incredible local acts from your town of Austin will be playing: Rayon Beach, Loteria and Nameless Frames. The latter is fairly new on the scene, but the other two have been killing it for years, with Loteria taking up my vote for most underrated act in town. You know you’ll have fun here.
The shows just keep coming and coming, and personally, this show at Hotel Vegas is a doozy. I loved Butter Knife, the latest record from Audacity, and in fact included it in our list of Top 50 Albums of 2013. It’s a high energy album, making their live show all the same, filled with great riffs and pop sensibility. But, as if that wasn’t enough, you should also be there to check out the local openers, Loteria, being my particular favorite of the bunch. They go on just before Audacity, but if you get there early, you’ll also be able to catch The Golden Ghetto and Slash & Spread. It’s a great little line-up, so if you’re in need of something to do, think about heading to Hotel Vegas.
There’s a great local event going on this Saturday evening in Austin: American Icon Christmas Bizarre at Hotel Vegas. What is it, and how does it fit into the ATH music coverage? Well, for starters it’s like a Farmer’s Market for what’s cool. There’s 13 vendors selling vintage clothes, jewelry, records and more; so you can get your Christmas shopping done before things turn crazy. But, accompanying the weekend sale are killer bands that you know we love such as Pharaohs, Grape St., Loteria and more! You get to shop, you get to drink, you get to see great bands, which pretty much means that this is a dream come true. Entrance is $7, and that money goes to help the bands live and breathe; it’s worth every penny. See ya’ll there!
I realize that as an Austin blog, we’ve got to do our part to spread the word more often about the great acts all over our fair city, so I wanted to introduce people to Loteria. They’ve been playing around for some time, and they’re currently working on finishing up a debut LP. Musically, they’ve got a punk rock attitude, though their sound has allegiance to Texas history, incorporating twanging guitars and country-style solos into their catchy numbers. Live, they’re energetic, whilst playing songs you’ll want to sing along to for the rest of the night. Good music is both creative and fun, and I know these guys definitely epitomize those two aspects.
It’s a ridiculous week for shows here in Austin; Rayray and I were commenting on the fact that we could go see a good show every night this week, should we choose to do so. One show I think you should keep an eye on that might be flying under the radar is the Sweet Talk show tonight at Beerland. They’re playing their last show before they head out on the road for a bit, but that’s not the only thing you’ll get. Gospel Truth is also playing to celebrate the release of their new record, A Lonely Man Does Foolish Things. I mean, you can’t ask for more, but you’ll get more because both Loteria and Pharaohs will be opening the night. Solid rock n’ roll and a solid bill. Here’s some jams from Sweet Talk and Pharaohs to get you in the mood.
Hopefully you’ve had a second to breather after free week, but it’s about time we all get right back at it. Luckily, if you’re looking for things on the cheap, there’s a great rock n’ roll show over at Beerland featuring some of our favorite acts, Holy Wave and Eets Feats. Both bands are really starting to make a name for themselves by working hard and playing about town as much as possible. They’ll be joined on stage by Classy Nude and Loteria…and Beerland always has cheap booze, so get out there and rock it out. You’ll love me for it the next day.
