Late Sunday night, our friend John from Side One Track One ran this track on his Sunday night 101 Homegrown show (why aren’t you listening). We asked Major Major Major if we could share it with you, as this is one of my favorite tracks from the group. I love the funky guitar chords, just before the track rolls into its playful breakdown that opens the way for a joyous of chorus. Another reason I dig this tune is you can practically picture the two breaking down the track together live, interacting with one another…and you…as they kick out this great tune. Look for their new album, PG-13 Movie, via Punctum Records on October 28th, with a release show secured at Cheer Up Charlies.

We’ve long been fans of Major Major Major, one of Austin’s most exciting duos. We’ve heard rumors of a brand new album for some time, and we finally get our first taste of what’s to come in the future. It’s a wild blasting tune, emphatically crashing on the chorus of “all of my friends are fucking useless now that I got what I wanted.” Hopefully what the group wanted was to blast out one of our favorite songs this week, whilst still managing to capture the raw energy of the group’s live set. Look for PG-13 via Punctum Records come this October!
Earlier this year I picked MCG as one of the band’s that would rise out of Austin this year (they played our ATX Popfest), spreading the pop gospel across the lands. They’ve been so kind to allow us to share their Outside EP with you as a preview before their 7″ release this Saturday over at Empire Control Room. Not only is the EP a must have for local vinyl collectors, but the show features some incredible local talent, including new act, Lou Rebecca, who we’ve heard lots of great things about (namely Stereolab allusions)…also Major Major Major and Mobley will play. It’s a great night to celebrate another solid Austin release with a bunch of solid Austin bands. Here’s the tracks on the EP, but one is only available if you grab the vinyl version.
If you can’t make the show…grab it HERE.
I’m getting overwhelmed with opportunities for great shows this week, and Thursday night’s no different. Still amazes me that people are still harping on “Austin music is dying” when there’s a million shows to hit up on any given night…but alas. Pay close attention as a lot of the gigs below are cover acts in honor of Halloween…like the show at Mohawk with our boys Rose Selavy; it also has prizes!
Here’s where you can find yourself this evening:
Goblin a Go-Go w/ Rose Selavy and Loafer @ Mohawk – 8 PM
Basketball Shorts, New China, Oozer, Mean Jolene @ Trailer Space – 7 PM (FREE)
Sweet Spirit, Crushed Out, Major Major Major @ Hotel Vegas – 10 PM
Otis the Destroyer, MCG, Ghostbunny, The Bravo @ Sidewinder – 9 PM
Peacers, Elisa Ambrogio, Quin Galavis, Shawn McMillen, Jared Leibowich @ Cheer Up Charlies – 8 PM

Austin’s got a busy weekend ahead of us, and it’s not because of a festival (for once). There’s album releases, benefit shows and celebrations of all sorts, but with so much to choose from, we’re here to take a look at some of the more vital shows on your Friday night line-up. It’s likely some of these will go to capacity, so if you’re looking for a ticket, do so now. Here you go folks… Read more
We like to promote the greater Austin community, despite being told there isn’t one. So today we’re encouraging you to hit up Cheer Up Charlies to party down for the release of True Sincerity #1, a quarterly journal by our friend Bryan over at Pop Press International. Not only is he working on putting out a great little local zine, but he’s also organizing a great show to celebrate. The line-up is full of bands we all love: it features: Borrisokane, Feverbones, Alex Napping, Tele Novella and Major x 3. It’s a night to enjoy local revelry and celebrate the creativity of like-minded individuals in town. Plus, it’s a chill spot to hang. Here’s a hit from Major Major Major to get you amped. The show is free, with a suggested donation.

Sometimes the madness that is the Austin music scene just never stops. This week’s been pretty ridiculous as it is, but the great shows keep coming…and I’m not just talking about that Vampire Weekend or Cloud Nothings show; there are some incredible local bills to catch, including a pretty awesome release show. Here’s my suggestions on where you might want to find yourself this weekend. Read more
Saturday night I was hanging out over at Hotel Vegas, catching a great local show in honor of this new single by Major Major Major. While the group’s line-up has changed quite a bit since their inception, the duo that remains still has the ability to get a crowd all riled up (which was par for the course for the night…see Growl/Shivery Shakes) into a frenzy. This new single is energetic, and revolves around the erratic vocals and pounding rhythm of the drums. You’ll be able to find this new track on the band’s up-coming EP, which we hope is out sooner rather than later.
