ATH Records Back to School Bash w/ 101X Homegrown

backtoschoolSaturday night folks! There’s only one place you should be come the end of the night (after you attend the PRIDE parade, of course): Barracuda for our Back to School Bash. Our label is about to celebrate it’s 10th official release with Mean Jolene…but ATH is also a home to teachers, so we wanted to celebrate back to school! What better way than to bring out the bands on our label and throw a big party with our friends from 101x Homegrown, who’ve graciously supported the label since its inception. You’ll have 8 bands, 2 stages, so please come celebrate with us. The night will include sets from Pollen Rx, Mean Jolene, Rose Selavy, Plantation Band, Young Girls, Basketball Shorts, Summer Salt and Shivery Shakes. If you’re not in town, be sure to check out our little stable of great Austin acts HERE. And stream the latest label hit from MJ below.

Doors are at 9 PM and it’s a measly $5. I’ll be on hand to sell you stuff.

Flavorsound Class of ’16 @ Barracuda (8.12)

flavorsavorI get it. Being a musician is hard, owning a venue is hard. But that’s anywhere in the world, even in Austin. But, while we have struggles here in town, we also have an e abundance of incredible acts popping up left and right. Flavorsound has organized a Class of 2016 Tape Compilation of the new bands that burst forth this year…including some of the acts on ATH Records like Plantation Band and Mean Jolene. It’s surely not an end all – be all list, but there’s great finds on the tape. So to celebrate, they’re throwing a release show at Barracuda tomorrow night featuring many of the acts…Planet Manhood, Lola Tried, Oozer, Mean Jolene, Vampyre and Sherman’s March. Stop by and check out some of the new sounds coming out of Austin. And if you live abroad, check out the Tape HERE or stream below.

MEAN_JOLENE_SALTY_FRONTIn case you haven’t noticed, we’ve got our own little label here at ATH, and we’re really stoked to be working with Mean Jolene for their debut album, Salty. Yesterday, Gold Flake Paint, a reputable place for hits, ran the album’s first single, “Bump the Rump.” It’s perfect timing, as this is a glorified summer hit; you’ll want to turn it up loud, whether you’re at your next pool party or speeding down the highway. If you want to sample the band’s sound live, they’ll be playing at the Flavorsound Class of 2016 Party at Barracuda on Friday…and also appearing at our ATH Records/101X Back to School Bash on August 27th. Show Preview: A. Sinclair Returns to Hotel Vegas – TONIGHT

A. SinclairFirst, this show is all about welcoming back A. Sinclair after their tour; it’s always good to show up and say hi to old friends, buy them a beer before they crash into that post-tour darkened den of sleep for a few weeks. Plus, if you come out early, like a music fan, you can catch Mean Jolene, who will be releasing their debut LP later this year via ATH Records (that’s us!). But, one thing people might be sleeping on in the presence of Tedo Stone of Atlanta, who garnered a lot of great press from the like heavy hitters with their album Marshes last year. Oh, and secretly hiding their all along is Star Parks, who’ve released one of my favorite LPs in Austin this year. It’s going to be cheap, and its going to be fun, and the weather will be cool enough to actually enjoy the great Hotel Vegas patio. See you tonight.

Flavorsound Productions Class of 2016 Premiere

flavorsavorThe last few years in Austin have seemed like a downer, everyone worrying about how the music scene here is dying. Well, I know it’s troublesome, but that’s not an Austin-centric issue. So let’s look on the bright side with Flavorsound Productions releasing a compilation of theClass of 2016. These are all acts that either got their start in 2016; you can tell by listening that while things are tough for the artists, there’s still an abundance of talented acts everywhere you look. We even have a hand in releasing a few of these acts, like Plantation Band and Mean Jolene (coming soon). Stream the whole compilation below, and see what Austin is really all about.

They’ll have a tape release of the compilation on August 12th over at Barracuda, so be on hand to get yours.

Thursday Night is Crazy for Austin Shows

Austin, I love you.Usually I like to pick one or two shows for the night and give you a rec, but Thursday is absolutely crazy; I guess it’s Cinco de Mayo.

You want some country? Check out Jason Boland and Plantation at 3 Ten ACL. Or Sturgill Simpson.

Little Austin punk rock? Go for Ghetto Ghouls and Nameless Frames at Beerland.

An ATH approved show? How about Rose Selavy, Mean Jolene, and Shivery Shakes at Sahara Lounge.

And don’t forget the teen friendly, Stereogum approved 1975 show at Stubbs.

You could even double dip, hitting up Luna early, then catch one of these late shows.

Thursday Night Austin Show Recommendations

ggI’m getting overwhelmed with opportunities for great shows this week, and Thursday night’s no different. Still amazes me that people are still harping on “Austin music is dying” when there’s a million shows to hit up on any given night…but alas. Pay close attention as a lot of the gigs below are cover acts in honor of Halloween…like the show at Mohawk with our boys Rose Selavy; it also has prizes!

3x3 with Templo X 41We love live music. We love Austin artists. We want to help you love them, too. We need your help to keep bringing you the best jams for cheap. Go to our shows, buy our records. /rant

The 3 x 3 series is a brilliant idea. Let’s make it easy for venues to be open when we know it is a smaller show and get new bands exposure. We had another brilliant lineup for last Monday’s show. We got to check out the first live set for Mean Jolene, ever. We got to see Caitlin from Ultraviolet dedicate a song to her parents. We got to see Templo X for the last time in a while before Paul headed back up to Philly. I got to take pictures. It was a great night of talking with the musicians, busting balls about 90’s Emo bands and a ton of great new songs.

Show Reminder: 3 x3 @ The Mohawk Tonight

image1We’re at it again, with another great 3 x 3 Series show for you to enjoy on a Monday night. This time around, we’ve got new act Mean Jolene, shoegazers Ultraviolet and ATH Records own, Templo X. Every band here is certainly worth a dollar, if not more, plus you can grab one of those cool Templo X Split 7″ w/ Rose Selavy…or get your hands on the Ultraviolet EP. Plus, if you want to start your night off early, the guys in Templo X will be DJing over at Mohawk for Happy Hour, spinning hits and shaking hands. Come on folks…$3 for 3 great bands….and you can get home before Midnight? Sounds like a win in our book.

3 x 3 Series Show @ Mohawk (9.21) w/ Templo X, Ultraviolet, Mean Jolene

image1At the very end of August we brought you the first of what we hope is an on-going series, 3 x 3…it’s 3 bands for 3 bucks. Well, we’re back at it with a new show this coming Monday evening, and a whole new set of bands. This event is sponsored by Tullamore Dew, which means all door money goes straight to the bands on the night. Who’s playing? Opening the night will be the new kid in town, Mean Jolene. It’s the new project from some of our friends in Those Howlings. Then, in no particular order, the shoegaze-tastic Ultraviolet, who just recently released their EP; and, the gem of the night is our very own Templo X, who will be playing their last ATX show before Paul has to leave town for a bit. Come on guys, 3 bands, 3 bucks. Doors at 8 PM @ the Mohawk.
