Magana Releases Teeth LP

Spending the last few years on the road with Mitski and Lady Lamb has clearly helped Jeni Magana find her footing as a songwriter, as Teeth, sounds like a statement of an artist stepping into their own light. The album single, “Break Free,” premiered here on ATH, and I found it an intoxicating number filled with synths that match of with Magana‘s powerful vocals. While that was clearly an upbeat number, there’s such diversity on the whole of Teeth that it feels like Jeni can do no wrong. Take the opening track “Garden,” which feels folk influenced then it pushes right into the bold bravado of “Beside You” in the following tune. “Girl in Chains” definitely has this aura of reclaiming power, perhaps alluding to the theme of Teeth and Jeni Magana claiming this musical space as her own. Show Preview: Mitski @ The Sidewinder (7/2)

Mitski_EbruYildiz_31This Saturday evening, you get the chance to catch some of the most buzzed bands of 2016 in your neck of the woods at The Sidewinder. Headlining the bill is Mitski, who is riding high off the release of Puberty 2, which came out earlier this year and is turning heads with both its beauty and its gore as Mitski explores the light and dark of indie rock. Joining the bill are Japanese Breakfast and Jay Som, who both bring something special and different to the lineup. Japanese Breakfast will floor you with their perfect dream pop, while Jay Somis an artist of the self proclaimed “woozy” genre. I suggest you get there early to get the most out of your money.

Now, tickets are sold out, but doors aren’t till 8pm tomorrow, so that gives you plenty of time to scramble around and find yourself some.

Check Out This Track From Mitski

unnamed-30I don’t know about you, but I live for the tracks that surprise me. You know, the ones where you think you’ve fully grasped where it’s going and then it spins you in a different, delightfully unexpected direction. This is the case for the newest single from Mitski, called “Your Best American Girl.” What begins as a slow and quiet track explodes sonically into a fuzzy garage-inspired crescendo, bringing a bit of drama. The vocals on this track are impossibly smooth and sweet, at first dominating the quiet mix and then contrasting the intense musical swells. It’s a masterfully crafted tune, that you’ll be playing again and again. Make sure to look out for Mitski’s upcoming album,Puberty 2, which will be out June 17th on Dead Oceans.

Show Pics: Elvis Depressedly @ The Mohawk (7/8)

Elvis DepressedlyCatching up on some pics I was gun shy to post given our instability last week (let me know if any of you see things loading weird or slowly).

Elvis Depressedly‘s solidly lo-fi delivery of well-crafted indie-pop songs charmed the ATH team. I missed them during SxSW, but The Mohawk and Transimssion remedied that for me with an indoor show. The show ended up selling out due to a highly popular double-headlining tour with Mitski and a great opener in Eskimeaux. I felt older than usual, lots of Xs on hands.

Read on for some pics and a few thoughts…

Show Preview: Elvis Depressedly + Mitski @ Mohawk (7.8)

Elvis DepressedlyThere’s a great deal of shows coming through town this week, and it just so happens that one of my favorite acts is on that list, Elvis Depressedly.  I first caught on to the act via my love of Coma Cinema, which is Mat Cothran’s solo project.  It’s all part of the lo-fi pop movement, though there are definitely some more abstract and strange movements going on within the project. They bring their new effort, New Alhambra, which has been well-received, especially by me!  They’ll be joining friends Mitski on stage, along with highly-touted newcomers, Eskimeaux. Doors will open for this gig at 8 PM, and you can grab $12 tickets HERE.
