Shine thine axe and prepare for two nights of face melting metal the likes have never before been seen when The Sword make their triumphant return to Austin this weekend.  Both shows are at Mohawk and are on Friday and Saturday.  Friday night also features Ratking and Pack of Wolves with Calm Blue Sea and Matthew and The Arrogant Sea inside after the headliners.  Saturday night includes opening support from Fingaar Bangaar and Woodgrain.  Get Friday night tickets here and Saturday ones here.  Don’t miss this… trust me.

Local shows are solid this week and Mohawk on Wednesday night is a great option to check out some of that local talent.  The lineup includes pop hit makers Loxsly, Birdlips and fairly new locals Ideal Soul Mart.  The show is also in celebration of Ideal Soul Mart’s debut LP which can be streamed in it’s entirety over on the band’s new bandcamp page.

We recently ran a feature on new Austin band TV Torso so we’re excited to see that they’ll be playing two shows in Austin on Thursday.  The first is an End of an Ear in-store at 6pm followed by a full on headlining set at Mohawk later in the evening.  The Mohawk show also features locals Pink Nasty and fellow A2W band The Authors.  That show starts around 10pm on the inside stage.  Check our Artist to Watch feature on TV Torso for more information about the band.

We spent a lot of time this week debating our favorite venue.  What constitutes the perfect place to catch a show?  Is it sound alone, or beer prices?  Maybe it’s both.  We decided that we wanted to narrow it down to the best five places in town where you’ll most likely see one of us, or one of our favorite bands playing.  We even developed a rating system for them.  We’ll be using our typical 5 Star system (1 being the lowest, 5 the highest) to rate the following areas: Sound Quality, Band Quality, Beer Prices, Atmosphere, and Mobility during packed shows. Last night inside the crowded, flood of sweat called Mohawk was a night of music that makes me proud to be an Austinite.  Martin Crane (from Brazos), Megafaun, and the Bowerbirds packed a full house and did not upset.  There were no disappointments and plenty of surprises, but you’ll have to keep reading to find out. We’ve really been looking forward to this Bowerbirds show with Megafaun at Mohawk for awhile now and the time has finally come!  The show will be on the inside stage and should start around 10pm.  Tickets are only $8 at the door.  Even better news, our very own Martin Crane of Austin band Brazos will be opening things up.

Mohawk has a nice lineup of local acts on the bill for Friday night which should be a good option for your weekend starting plans.  The lineup includes locals The Ugly Beats, Shapes Have Fangs and English Teeth.  Doors are set to open at 10pm with entrance fee at $6.  Here’s a little taste of what’s in store with this little jam from The Ugly Beats.

If you’re looking for some real rock n roll in your life, head over to Mohawk on Saturday night for an incredible lineup of local acts.  Both stages of Mohawk will be occupied with locals Scorpion Child, Eagle Claw, Pack of Wolves, Castle and Shitty Car Wash all performing during the night’s events.  Tickets are only at the door and things start around 9pm.
