Show Preview: Active Child @ Mohawk (5/4)

Date 5/4/12
Location Mohawk
Doors 8pm
Tickets $10 @ Frontgate

I’ve been pumped for this show since the Active Child show at Fun Fest, and finally the band is coming into town this Friday at Mohawk.  Joining the group in support is Balam Acab and Superhumanoids.  I know that many in the ATH crew will be on hand for this one and I’m sure we’ll see ya there to share some brews.

Show Preview: Allo Darlin @ the Mohawk (5/1)

Date Tuesday, May 1st
Location Mohawk
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $8 from Frontgate

Those of you who are in any way fans of great indie pop need to be sure you’re in attendance at this excellent show on Tuesday evening.  Allo Darlin and the Wave Pictures are two of the best UK indie pop acts, and they rarely make it all the way over to our side of the pond.  All Darlin just released their latest record, Europe, and the Wave Pictures put out Long Black Cars in the past month as well.  All you need to do is spend five minutes listening to each band and you’ll know that your attendance is necessary.  Opening the night is No Future, the new reincarnation of the band formerly known (and loved) as Leatherbag.

Show Preview: Feist @ Stubbs (4/26)

Date 4/26/12
Location Stubbs
Doors 7pm
Tickets SOLD OUT!

It seems crazy that Feist has grown to this insane amount of popularity after humble begins in Broken Social Scene.  I can’t say I’m a huge fan of all of her material, but she can certainly write her fair share of catchy pop tunes that appease the masses.  The lovely lady stops into town on Thursday night at Stubbs in Austin for what is sure to be the hottest ticket in town.  Opening support is provided by Timber Timbre.  This show has been sold out for quite some time so check out craigslist or other such ventures to get a way in.

Show Review: Hunx @ the Mohawk (4/18)

The last trip for Hunx in town was a little underwhelming, at least so far as the live show, so I was hoping he could redeem himself on this particular evening, backed by a strong supporting cast of openers.

Read on for my thoughts and the excellent images of one Brian Gray.

Show Preview: Hunx and His Punx @ Mohawk (4/18)

Date Wednesday, April 18th
Location Mohawk
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $8 from Frontgate

Need a little fix of poppy garage rock on Hump Day, then I think you better do your best to make your way over to Mohawk to catch this excellent show! Opener Hunx and His Punx just released Hairdresser Blues on Hardly Art, and it has some of the best songs he’s written to date, not to mention his always entertaining sets.  Then you’ll get the heavier, yet equally incredible Natural Child from Nashville, intent upon breaking into our hearts and ears.  And opening up the night are two other hot acts in our eyes, Grape Street and The Vomettes.  Probably one of the best line-ups I’ve seen in a bit, so be there or be square.

Show Preview: Chairlift @ Mohawk (4/17)

Date Tuesday, April 17th
Location Mohawk
Doors 630 pm
Tickets $12 @ the Door

Sometimes we don’t do our best to cover all the incredible female voices out there in indie rock these days, but that being said, tonight’s show at Mohawk is going to feature some of the best voices of that ilk.  The headliner Chairlift has been a huge success since they first appeared on iPod commercials, but their sound goes a lot deeper than what you’d expect.  Ramona Gonzalez on the other hand is the woman behind Nite Jewel, and her recent album One Second Love has made a huge impact on the Internet, so expect her to wow the crowd as well. Another female artist, Bell, will be opening the evening for us all, so if you’re looking for the musical genius on the female side of things, you know where to be!

Show Review: Terry Malts @ the Mohawk (4/11)

During a busy week in town, musically speaking, Brian and I jumped at the chance to catch one of our favorite acts, Terry Malts, as they returned to town. We moved beyond our exhaustion, and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, rocking out til the bar closed.

Read on for some quick thoughts on all the bands and check out Brian’s photos!
