Lie Ready Hounds

Feel like today had me going into a casual place of joy, so I had to make sure I introduced you to something slightly darker, like Vancouver’s Lie(note, there’s an accent over the e, wordpress sucks). The group just announced their newest album, Hounds, by offering up this smashing number. Guitars immediately push you in one direction, rushing you with their discordant chugs as the drums shatter through your speakers. Those cavernous folks help the song’s natural ambiance, darkening your soul while your body tries to catch up with the rhythm. Plus, the new effort is guaranteed good times, as it’s being released by Mint Recs in Canada and Monofonus Press in the US; it drops July 6th.

Don’t Overlook Rose Mercie

There’s a million songs a day coming to most of us, so you’ve got to dig a little deep to find some real gems. That’s how I stumbled upon French outfit Rose Mercie, who are preparing for the release of their self-title debut. Some outlets have thrown in comparisons to the Raincoats or The Shangri-Las, and all are fair, but there’s definitely a more modern twist around here. Just listen to the guitar on the track below; its angular and spirited, but presented in a casual fashion…akin to a dozen modern acts over here in the States. If you’re hoping to find some pop music on the unique side of things, then this is where you should go. Their debut is being released by SDZ Recordsand Monofonus Press on March 2nd.

ATX Spotlight: Hidden Ritual Share New Jam

unnamed-9A quick search tells me that we have somehow never shared any music from Austin based group Hidden Ritual. Today I fix this error by giving you their new track “Rat”. I’m immediately reminded here of some earlier Wolf Parade sounds if they went straight lo-fi pop. Hopefully that makes a little bit of sense to you music fans out there…. Either way, enjoy the track and share some love for Hidden Rituals.

ATX Spotlight: Fresh New Spray Paint Tune

Spray-PaintPeople in Austin, aside from myself, have got to be tired of hearing about Spray Paint. They’re probably one of Austin’s hardest working bands, at least in so far as studio work goes…they’re already prepping their second LP of the year, harkening back to the band’s output of 2013. This new single plods along with angular discordant guitars stabbing in your speakers in a repetitive fashion, while the rest of the track rises and falls within the space left between the vocals and those guitar sounds. Dopers has 8 new tracks to be released by Monofonus Press on October 23rd.

ATX Spotlight: New Ghetto Ghouls Album On the Way

11700543_915848105139667_5739135878276486396_oIf you’re an Austin fan, or really just a fan of good rock n’ roll, then surely you’ve heard the great work Austin’s Ghetto Ghouls have been putting out the last few years.  They’ve got several releases with some of the best labels in town (12XU and Monofonus Press), and they’re set to release Collisions, their new effort, on Monofonus next week. The first single we’ve heard perfectly encapsulates the band’s live sound, with tenacious swirling guitar chords wrapping themselves around the emphatic vocals of frontman Corey Anderson.  Not only does the band have an incredible new song, but they’ve got a great release show planned for August 1st at Hotel Vegas with Flesh Lights, US Weekly and Decider.

ATX Spotlight: Decider Prep EP

deciderFor all the nonsense about Austin music dying out here, our little town still has this ability to birth some really creative work, such as the new signing for Monofonus Press, Decider. The single we’ve been offered by the label has this stuttering post-punk that comes with some little interludes of careful guitar precision (reminds me of the first Liars LP).  Eventually, the song opens up for this blasting wall of noise that closes the track with an impending notion of of noisy doom. You can grab the band’s Sad Jose EP from the label this week on cassette; pick it up HERE.

Beech Creeps Offer Noisy Pop Sensibility

creepinClearly, one can press the distortion pedal and let the guitars ring loud; we’ve seen that quite a bit over the last few years as noise and shoegaze have made their full return.  But, Beech Creeps do it with a style that really exemplifies the band’s natural inclination towards writing pop songs.  The guitars swell throughout the track, and that’s all well and good, but the slightest vocal touches seem to turn the song from something dangerously monstrous into a hook-laden burst of noisy joy. You’ll be able to hear more of the same, hopefully, when the band drops their self-titled full length on March 3rd via Monofonus Press.

Stream the New Album from Trans Upper Egypt

transThese boring little pages of ours have seen several songs pop up from Trans Upper Egypt, so I figured why not give you the opportunity to listen to their whole new self-titled LP?  It’s music of the psychedelic sort, with the vocals often obscured in the mix while bass lines rhythmically bounce along.  Me? I dig the album; it’s different in a sense than a lot of the other “psych rock,” so it alone wins points for that in my book.  Monofonus Press will be releasing the album next Tuesday, but be a smart consumer, and listen in before you buy.

New Music from Trans Upper Egypt

transLocal Austin label Monofonus Press is always pretty reliable when it comes to releasing new tunes, and their latest signing is pretty spot on.  The band is a Roman act by the name of Trans Upper Egypt, and they’ve built quite a name for themselves working DIY style overseas.  You’ll hear a huge buzz coating the track, supported by some great drum work that often seems about to run right off the rails.  Guitars will screech and swirl from the sides, helping to wrap up the vocals in a nice little cocoon of cacophony.  Look for their self-titled album on November 4th.

Austin Spotlight: Even More New Jams from Spray Paint

painterstapeWe’ve already featured several of the new tracks from the next Spray Paint LP, Clean Blood, Regular Acid, so why not get you hip to yet another.  On this song, there’s a lot of reason to see the band as one of those outfits that only play by their own rules…the guitars take on varying tonal qualities, the gang call-and-response vocals come at you from a distant, and there’s this bending chord that swells within the tune.  It kind of reminds me of Liars when they were young and didn’t give a fuck, which is perfect, as I don’t think these care about anything other than making great rock n’ roll on their own terms…albeit really great/interesting terms. You can grab their new album from Monofonus Press on September 23d.
