Have a Nice Weekend With Lou Rebecca and Night Drive

It has been a pretty good week of electronic jams. From the new Fever Ray today to Bayonne’s latest to the Korine track. All solid offerings. Maybe you should just resolve to shimmy all weekend with this cooler weather. It is finally fall. LCD Soundsystem out at COTA seems a good way to spend Halloween. I am hoping my skwuad can rock our onesies. If you see a platypus, perhaps with a camera, say hi.

I will leave everyone with one last bit of electro-pop goodness. It is from French-born, part-time local Lou Rebecca, who with Josh Mills on programming and keys, has been turning out wonderfully crafted French disco. Holodeck picked up the pending release and we now have a full shimmy-inducing slice of heaven following the more thoughtfully subdued and bilingual lead single from the S/T EP.

Almost forgot. Our friends Night Drive have a video out for “Trapeze Artist Regrets”. Check it.

Show Pics: Night Drive Release Party @ Cheer Up (6/16)

We are in the throws of the longest days of the year and while it will get a bit hotter, it won’t get much hotter that last Friday. The hotness was overcome.

Night Drive threw a party at Cheer Up Charlies and we were all invited as long as you contributed $5 at the door. Isn’t that nice. Four bands, a DJ that popped jams, so many friends and even some family. Attendees got to see Keeper, Orthy, Night Drive (duh) and Single Lash with Lambda spinning jams in between.

If you click through, you will be rewarded with many images. You will be able to read more words. Thanks.

Show Preview: Night Drive Release Party @ Cheer Up TONIGHT!

Come dance with us.

Night Drive is finally able to unleash their self-titled full length out today. To commemorate, we are gathering at Cheer Up Charlies for a night music and fun. They wanted to invite friends that they love and make some new ones to join them on stage. If you show up, you get good friends Orthy, who have promised a bunch of new music, Keeper, Single Lash and Lambda.

That is a really nicely stacked lineup. Add to it, AmuricaTX will have their photobooth trailer to immortalize things and Captain Morgan is providing the drink specials if you dare.

I’ll be there taking the pics for ATH along with +1 and many friends and familiar faces. We’re thinking a burger and Salt and Time would be fun beforehand. It will be hot. Be ready. Dress sensibly. Comfortable shoes. Nathan loves when I bring up comfortable shoes. Tickets are $5 at the door.

To get psyched, have a listen…

Night Drive News

We don’t shy away from the fact that the ATH loves Night Drive. “Rise And Fall” is on my JamOTY list. The new record is finally final with a June 16th release date. The s/t debut rehashes a few hits we are familiar with while adding new tracks that have been on the periphery of recent live sets. New song below!

Speaking of live sets, the big release party is also officially official. Details available on the bookface, but the short and sweet is 6/16, Cheer Up, Orthy, Keeper, Single Lash and Lambda for $5. In.

Night Drive Shares A Video

I was talking with Rodney from Night Drive at the Bryan Ferry show. Seems the record coming out on Roll Call Records is just about set for release and that means promo time. Among the plans, a record release June 16th at Cheer Up. We will be there. How about a video, too?

If you haven’t gotten behind this jam you, I suggest you do. The vid is directed by Yoshi Sodeoka. Psyched out, kinda. Let’s dance.

Show Pics: Austra@ The Mohawk (2/3)

Here comes a little bonus coverage. I was able to sneak next door to The Mohawk during the Tres Oui record release and grab shots of our friends Night Drive and the headliner Austra.

Pleasantly packed house, meaning while it was almost sold out feel, you could still get through the crowd, if necessary. Fans were there and up front early, ready to lose their minds to their favorite song. That favorite song varied. Some were in love with the recently released record, others held their excitement for the jams from the early buzziest buzzworthy material.

Some Free Week Pics…

I do love Free Week. The day job keeps me from going every night, but ANY night of Free Week means seeing tons of friends on stage and off. This edition of Free Week photos features photos of Light Wheel, Big Bill, Night Drive, Rose Selavy, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, a tiny cupcake fail, ladder climbing, toasts, staples and so much more. Venues visited were The Mohawk, Cheer Up and Barracuda.

I’m going to post a few thoughts on the backside of the break. The short story is that Big Bill can’t lose, Night Drive is still my favorite dance party, Rose Selavy is rad as a three-piece, Letting Up can do the same and Barracuda was surprisingly packed.

TIP YOUR BARTENDERS. BUY MERCH.

day-for-night-sun-282Second big gallery, this one is nuts cause we had a full day of festing planned out.

First of all, you can’t plan the weather, but you can plan for it. It was frrrreaky cold. I was sporting my fluffy socks, gloves, the wind proof jacket and the X-Men scarf (thanks, Beth). The suffering was worth it as once again, the fest proved to be a fantastic place to have a camera.

The Sunday gallery from Day for Night features Nothing, S U R V I V E, Ariel Pink, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats, Matmos, Lightning Bolts, Liars, Night Drive, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Little Dragon and Butthole Surfers. Wow.

Day For Night Interview: Night Drive

Night DriveRegular readers know that we love the synth-pop jams from our friends at Night Drive. Day for Night will include the Austin/Houston based outfit and I figured I would do a little Q&A action to help preview the awesome festivities. Rodney and Brandon took some time to deal with the usual list of things about life, fests and jams.

Rise And Fall With New Night Drive

Night DriveI have a festival hangover. After seeing hundreds of bands in just a few months, it gets hard to get up for going out to hit shows, especially when living the photo guy festival life is so not like the real world. It is an alternate universe that is easy to get used to, the rhythm of shoot band, run into friends, get supplies, rinse, repeat. With an approval for Day for Night already in hand, festival season isn’t over yet. But Aphex Twin! I know you all feel very sympathetic for our struggle.

One of the Austin bands making the run to DfN is Night Drive. They are an Austin favorite and go-to dance party for the ATH team. Rodney and Brandon love all the things we love about dark dance-pop, from pulsating beats to grainy synths and brooding chords living underneath the plinks and big beats. They will release a full-length in February, self-titled, that has a few new songs, a few re-recorded hits and they are using this jam as the lead single. I’ve heard this gem live a few times. It is so good.
