Quitt Share Partys Single

Admittedly, I’m not entirely sure what the lyrical content (it’s in German!) of the latest tune from Quitt is, but I’ve really enjoyed the band’s sound, and sometimes that’s all you really need, right? They’ve got this sound that’s part Discord/part Obits; I think if they upped the pace and let things go, it’d be all over that Obits/Hot Snakes territory. Sharp edges, propulsive rhythm and that scratchy bit of vocals barking from the stage all make for the perfect sound, at least if you’re asking this fella here. You can find this track on the German band’s new Dumm und Extrovertiert EP!

Another New Tune from SAVAK

SAVAK-BestOfLuck-cvr-3690x3690-768x768Touting members from Obits, Holy Fuck and Nation of Ulysses is just one of the reasons SAVAK has got my attention, but I think this brand new single has reallysolidified meon their sound as a whole. While some of those acts have a heavier hand, I like the way this track takes sort of a jittery stomp throughout, occasionally fueled by handclaps. Based on the vocals alone, I think it’s going tograb some ears and wonder why we haven’t been listening to these guys all along. Look for their debut Best of Luck in Future Endeavors on May 27th.

We Love Obits…and Their New Single

ObitsI’ve actually grown to appreciate  Obits as their own entity; I used to love them based solely on their earlier bands.  On this new song, the second single from their upcoming album, they’re, surprisingly, not going on full blast.  There’s still that rawness, which admittedly can be attributed to the vocals, but the warmth of the guitar towards the end of the track really finds the band going in different directions.  Bed Bugs is the title of the new album, and it’s being released by Sub Pop on September 10th; are you ready to rock?

Obits Return and Rock Out

ObitsWe’re a little late on this new jam from Obits that dropped yesterday, but we love the band too much to pass on posting new tunes just because we might be a bit tardy.  So with that out of the way, here’s the new power rockin’ number from Obits called “Taste the Diff”.  Of course it’s about what you’d expect to hear from these veterans, it’s a jam with screeching vocals and a no BS attitude approach to songwriting.  We can all get behind that right?

A new album entitled Bed & Bugs will drop on September 10th via Sub Pop Records.

Show Preview: Red 7 6th Anniversary w/ Obits (8/3)

Date Friday, August 3rd
Location Red 7
Doors 900 pm
Tickets $13 from Transmission

As Red 7 continues the weekend with their anniversary shows, they’ve got what I personally think is the best line-up in town.  You’ve got to get there early because three of the hottest rock n’ roll acts in Texas will be opening things up.  You’ll get Fleshlights, James Arthur’s Manhunt, and my personal favorite Mind Spiders.  The Spiders recent record Meltdown is still killing it on my record player, and their live show is always a blast.  And the finale finishes strong with Obits closing the night out.  The band is fronted by Rick Froberg of Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes fame, and that alone makes it a show you can’t afford to miss. Hope we see you there!

Show Preview: Obits @ Red 7 (9/16)

Date 9/16/11
Location Red 7
Doors 9pm
Tickets $12 @ Frontgate

You kids leaving early from the festival on Friday night(most of us), should head on down to Red 7 for a sweet show going down featuring Sub Pop rockers Obits.  Joining the guys on stage are some great local bands in the form of Hex Dispensers, Broken Gold, and Ghost Knife.  I predict that this one might just be a better offering when compared to some of the other expensive ass after shows in town.  Oh and remember that this isn’t a festival after show so don’t hope to see Obits anywhere else over the weekend.

New Track from Obits

For me, 2011 is looking really exciting.  It seems like the guys with guitars are taking aim at the rest of us, and really letting loose.  Yet another release I’m excited for comes from Obits, who will be releasing their new record, Moody, Standard and Poor via Sub Pop on March 29th.  My favorite reason to get super excited here is that singer/guitarist Rick Froberg used to jam in Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes.  Much like those two groups, Obits always seem on the verge of kicking you in the face via heavy percussion and sharp-edged guitars, but as age has taught them some restraint, they’ve honed their chops just enough to keep it all cohesive.  One listen to the drums here, though not necessarily experimental, more just pounding, and you’ll probably be tapping your feet at your desk. We’re cool with that.

Free Album Streams

So many artists are beginning to realize that actually selling albums is impossible and are turning to streaming music online to possibly spark album sales.  Not sure about the strategy, but this week features a slew of solid releases that you can try before you buy.  Spinner is streaming loads of new releases this week like The Decemberists, Obits, the flippin’ Pearl Jam Ten re-issue, Gomez and several more.  Peter, Bjorn & John are also streaming their new album Living Thing over on their myspace page.  What’s your take on some of these new albums?
