Show Preview: Say Sue Me @ the Parish (11.16)

If you’ve been reading this site, for a few years now we’ve been huge supporters of South Korea’s Say Sue Me. Well, they’re finally returning to the States, and playing one of their few North American shows here at Austin’s The Parish. They’ve mastered the art of writing infectious pop sounds, and as they’ve shown with recent singles like “4am,” they’ve begun to expand that sound into something more complex and textured. I caught them twice on their last visit, and their sets were spot-on musically, leaving me with a sense of joy that I don’t always get at the end of a set. The Small Intestines Share Old Town

If you’re of a certain listening habit, and you know who you are, you’re definitely seeing the Small Intestines as one of the year’s most anticipated records. The Aussie outfit features members of Chook Race and Peach Happening working together between projects to create something new and exciting. Employing sharp angular chops is always going to be an easy way to grab my attention, but it’s hard not to fall in love with the dual vocal approach from Matt and Tristan as it breeds a sense of natural camaraderie that makes being in a band so much fun. Personally, I love the recording a lot too, the cymbal work gets captures perfectly, so its not all smashing drums and bass grooves; it rules. Hide in Time might be your favorite LP of the year; it drops on September 29th via Lost and Lonesome/Meritorio.

People Are Finally Catching on to Say Sue Me

It’s taken some time for the sounds of Say Sue Me to catch on in the United States, though we’ve been fans for some time. The Korean indiepoppers employ the same charming bounce that I’m a huge fan of…and I compared them to crafting the same hook-laden gems akin to Alvvays; I dare not shy away from that comparison now, as they seem to really drive home that similarity on this number. There’s jangling guitars, steady-as-needed drumming and the right pulsing throb from the bassline…think of New Order having a whole lot more fun. Can’t say enough good things about the band, but be sure to check out all the hidden treasures in their back catalog…I suggest “Good for Some Reason.”
