One the last few years, Phil Wilson and his pop outfit the Raft have been dropping these casual singles and EPs, all of which had artwork depicting jellyfish; now they’ve collected all the songs and reordered them to put out the collection titled The Jellyfish EPs. The song’s have been reordered a bit, which gives the album a more cohesive flow, pitting soft-bellied tunes against the more emphatic numbers. I keep getting drawn into “Orion;” it has this power pop vibe if spun through a web of indiepop influences. But, if you’re looking for an album that’s solid songwriting from start to finish, then take a few minutes to spend it with this collection; it’s available via Shore Dive Records.
I’m really glad that Phil Wilson came back to music; I’ve enjoyed his solo work quite a bit since that triumphant return, but I’m really excited for his music with The June Brides too. Seems like the old band is back together, and finding themselves on the only home that’s fitting, Slumberland Records. This feels like listening to the guitar playing that spawned a revolution of wandering indiepop fans. They’ll be releasing their new She Seems Quite Free 7″ on September 1st; it’ll probably be the best thing you can get yourself as a post-Labor Day treat. Feels too good to listen to this track. For those of you who missed Phil Wilson’s last record, God Bless Jim Kennedy, you can happily sink your teeth into his return under the June Brides moniker. The group’s just released a new 7″ with Slumberland Records. As always, his voice sounds quieted, seemingly taking the background to the song’s inner harmony, fleshed out with string arrangements. Personally, I love how there’s a bit of a stomp just before the 1 minute mark.
