Last Week’s Jams, Today (4.4 – 4.8)

Here we are folks, another Monday. We’re starting off the week, as we always do, looking back at last week’s hits, just in case our five followers missed a song or two. We’ve got new indie pop stuff from Red Sleeping Beauty and Jeanines, plus new tunes from long-time ATH faves, Stephen’s Shore. Then there’s a new Chronophage album on the way, so we’ve got that covered here too. It’s a quick little way to breeze into your week here, starting things off nice and light. Enjoy!

Piney Gir Announces Alchemy Hand EP

I’m finding it hard to turn away from the latest Piney Gir single, signaling a brand new EP is on the horizon. For starters, Piney as a songwriter, and within this new single, changes direction as quickly as you’re settled. Listen to the first 55 seconds or so, relishing the pseudo Jenny Lewis stylings at play, but then suddenly it’s all switched up, giving the song more lift. You get similar moments in the four minutes below, moving and switching notes, stretching the sound into something that can easily stand besides the work of Aldous Harding or Cate Le Bon. Give a listen below, and look for Alchemy Hand EP this June via Reckless Yes.

Piney Gir Drops New Single

In listening to this new Piney Gir single, I’ve been going back over it again and again just trying to figure out why I find it so intoxicating. There’s something oddly nostalgic about it, as if Piney’s work has a timelessness fitting it into both the past and present all at once. For one, the song’s construction is precise, allowing open space for the voice, whilst also filling in some of the odd turns with textured instrumentation. But, I’ll also keep coming back just to hear some of the vocal turns; I like slight change in intonation just after the 35 second mark…it builds right into the grand chorus. She’s enjoying a brief UK tour with Gaz Coombes, but lets hope that only gives her more tunes to offer us in the future.
