I do love Free Week. The day job keeps me from going every night, but ANY night of Free Week means seeing tons of friends on stage and off. This edition of Free Week photos features photos of Light Wheel, Big Bill, Night Drive, Rose Selavy, Letting Up Despite Great Faults, a tiny cupcake fail, ladder climbing, toasts, staples and so much more. Venues visited were The Mohawk, Cheer Up and Barracuda.
I’m going to post a few thoughts on the backside of the break. The short story is that Big Bill can’t lose, Night Drive is still my favorite dance party, Rose Selavy is rad as a three-piece, Letting Up can do the same and Barracuda was surprisingly packed.
TIP YOUR BARTENDERS. BUY MERCH.
Nathan summed it up in a book face post. He, with Mike’s help, runs a label that is proud of the content, proud of the people, happy to be helping bands in Austin have merch to sell and fund the next project. It is a ton of work; pursuing, promoting, logistics and coordination. I am happy to be associated with ATH records.
Hit the read more and view the greatness of Pollen Rx, Mean Jolene, Rose Selavy, Plantation Band, Young Girls, Basketball Shorts, Summer Salt and Shivery Shakes (in drag).
Saturday night folks! There’s only one place you should be come the end of the night (after you attend the PRIDE parade, of course): Barracuda for our Back to School Bash. Our label is about to celebrate it’s 10th official release with Mean Jolene…but ATH is also a home to teachers, so we wanted to celebrate back to school! What better way than to bring out the bands on our label and throw a big party with our friends from 101x Homegrown, who’ve graciously supported the label since its inception. You’ll have 8 bands, 2 stages, so please come celebrate with us. The night will include sets from Pollen Rx, Mean Jolene, Rose Selavy, Plantation Band, Young Girls, Basketball Shorts, Summer Salt and Shivery Shakes. If you’re not in town, be sure to check out our little stable of great Austin acts HERE. And stream the latest label hit from MJ below.
Doors are at 9 PM and it’s a measly $5. I’ll be on hand to sell you stuff.

This Friday at Cheer up Charlies is a celebration of a lot of hard work by everyone involved in the release of Young Girls new album Party Blood. I know ATH considers Young Girls as more than just label mates at this point and more like good friends. So come out and support us and support our band as they play you some sweet tunes. This is truly an ATH Records show as support is provided by Shivery Shakes, Quiet Kids, and Rose Selavy. Hell and it’s cheap too.
Stream the new album in full below and buy a copy here. Facebook event page here.
Usually I like to pick one or two shows for the night and give you a rec, but Thursday is absolutely crazy; I guess it’s Cinco de Mayo.
You want some country? Check out Jason Boland and Plantation at 3 Ten ACL. Or Sturgill Simpson.
Little Austin punk rock? Go for Ghetto Ghouls and Nameless Frames at Beerland.
An ATH approved show? How about Rose Selavy, Mean Jolene, and Shivery Shakes at Sahara Lounge.
And don’t forget the teen friendly, Stereogum approved 1975 show at Stubbs.
You could even double dip, hitting up Luna early, then catch one of these late shows.
I looked at the Austin schedule for Tuesday night, and there’s no where you need to be more than at Mohawk to catch Bent Shapes. They’re touring on the back of their recent release Wolves of Want (Slumberland Records), which has gotten praise from all the Internet heavies. They’ve got this blend of pop-rock that’s so infectious you can’t find a way to turn it off. Plus, the show’s relatively early, so you can still make it home in time to catch some zzz’s. Joining the band will be local up-and-comers, Ponyboy and the Horsegirls and perennial indiepoppers, Rose Selavy.
Doors to the show are at 8 PM, and your presence is required.
Local pop music has me excited, with tons of new bands brewing about town with hits galore. Kindatheart is one such young band, bringing upbeat pop rock of the indiepop ilk, even including some trading male/female vocal harmonies to boot! Of course, I’d be remiss to not mention two of the other acts taking part; Wildfires and Rose Selavy. Rose Selavy are great friends of ours, and the band is currently in the studio working on finishing touches for what we believe is a debut LP. It’s cheap, doors are at 8 PM, and you can go home feeling good about your life. Stream this sampler EP from Kindatheart to get a feel for the night’s vibes.
Thank you, Spider House. Thank you, Mother Nature. Thank you, bands.
The weather was absolutely perfect. We were given blue skies, the occasional cloud, a lovely breeze to pair with some of the best music heard at SxSW. I mean, Diet Cig, The Spook School, Beverly and Brothers In Law to name a few, and add splendid local talent like Summer Salt, Rose Selavy, Ramesh and an Austin reunion of Literature. How can I dare say there was even more awesome?
Check out words from Team ATH about best-ofs, hashtag all of it kicked ass, and plenty of pics.
Remember that one time we put out that rad 7″ from Rose Selavy and Templo X? It’s HERE just in case. But, more importantly, Rose Selavy is teaming up with Baby Bleu for a split tape release via Merdurhaus Records. I’m pretty sure it’s something you’re going to want to add to your tape collection (or MP3 if that’s your bag). It’s going to be released on a super limited basis, which means you’re going to have to hurry, especially after you hear the two tracks they’re previewing below. Give it all a listen, then go grab it from MR over HERE.
SXSW is nearing, and ATH has been working with our friends at ATX Popfest to bring you what we know is THE place to be on Wednesday, March 16th. Welcome to the Jangle! Those of you who are pop fans need to come over to Spider House on that day, starting at 12 PM. It’s ALL AGES, and will go all day and night…filled with some of the best talent coming into town. Here’s a quick list of who all is playing: Summer Salt, Hockey Dad, Pinact, Mercury Girls, Wildhoney, Brothers In Law, Beverly, Expert Alterations, Rose Selavy, Fear of Men, September Girls, Diet Cig, Spook School, Dead Stars, Hibou, Tennis System, Literature, and Ramesh.
We’ll have more details as we get closer, but wanted you to plan on taking the day off to spend it with us.
