Our friends The Ocean Party made it to the US again to do a spell of touring. Their reason for coming to Austin was to visit sports bars, wear thongs while riding bicycles and crush some chicken-fried steak. Since that was all easily accomplished in a single 80’s montage, a show was in order. Given the affection we have for the Aussie’s, it would be natural to want to see them at a friendly venue with a friend-filled lineup. Cheer Up played host and joining the bill was Daphne, Summer Salt and Shivery Shakes.
I have a great big gallery of photos to share after the break along with a few comments.
I encourage you all to head out tomorrow night to Cheer Up Charlies. There’s a huge line-up of great pop music, some of which I’ve had a hand in putting out on vinyl. For instance, we’ve helped The Ocean Party from Australia put out Light Weight in the US, and this might be one of the few chances you get to see the band live! Second, you’ll have Shivery Shakes and Summer Salt, both perennial pop powerhouses who we’ve released stuff from in the past (and present). Plus, you’ll get to hear Daphne, which is Santiago from Growl‘s other project, as well as Summer Swells. You won’t find a better bill in town, and it’s free, with donations highly encouraged to help out The Ocean Party while on tour in the States. Sample some tunes below, and see you tomorrow at 9 PM.
TONIGHT! If you’re in Austin and you like pop music, you need to come out to Hotel Vegas to catch this rad little pop show, featuring new ATH Records band, and old fave, Growl…plus OG labelmates Shivery Shakes. Growl’s got a new album coming in April (the 7th to be exact), so you can hear a lot of their new stuff to get your anticipation up. Plus, Shivery Shakes are working on a new record, which means you get to hear the band try out new tunes tonight! They’ll be joined by Dryspell and Deep State, making it an all around night of hits! Show starts at 10 over at the hotel, so be there or be square.
In case you haven’t noticed, it’s holiday season, and what better way to celebrate than with a great Holiday Revue show, like the one at Cheer Up Charlies on Saturday night. The show features Botany, Big Bells, Wintertime Fun Band (members of BBall Shorts), David Israel and Shivery Shakes. As if the musical line-up wasn’t solid enough, they’ll also be holding a raffle with goodies from Super Secret Records, Western Vinyl and our ATH Records…plus much more. All you have to do is bring socks or underwear to the show to donate to ARCH, which with the cold coming in is definitely a worthy cause for us all to participate in. There’s more on the event HERE, and some songs to enjoy below.
Saturday night folks! There’s only one place you should be come the end of the night (after you attend the PRIDE parade, of course): Barracuda for our Back to School Bash. Our label is about to celebrate it’s 10th official release with Mean Jolene…but ATH is also a home to teachers, so we wanted to celebrate back to school! What better way than to bring out the bands on our label and throw a big party with our friends from 101x Homegrown, who’ve graciously supported the label since its inception. You’ll have 8 bands, 2 stages, so please come celebrate with us. The night will include sets from Pollen Rx, Mean Jolene, Rose Selavy, Plantation Band, Young Girls, Basketball Shorts, Summer Salt and Shivery Shakes. If you’re not in town, be sure to check out our little stable of great Austin acts HERE. And stream the latest label hit from MJ below.
Doors are at 9 PM and it’s a measly $5. I’ll be on hand to sell you stuff.
We’ve had a great year at ATH Records, and we’re not looking to slow down. We’re working on projects with Mean Jolene at the moment, and Pollen Rx! Hopefully those in Austin are taking note, and getting as excited as we are. Speaking of Pollen Rx, they’re about to head out on the road for two weeks, but they aim to kick it off with a blast of a show at Cheer Up Charlies tomorrow night. Not only are they a band to watch, but we’ve also got ATH Records alumni Shivery Shakes and Slack Capital vets, Que Pasa on the bill. Come hang out with us all.
Oh, and the below song will appear on the debut Pollen Rx LP, but in a different version…so keep an eye out for news.
Usually I like to pick one or two shows for the night and give you a rec, but Thursday is absolutely crazy; I guess it’s Cinco de Mayo.
You want some country? Check out Jason Boland and Plantation at 3 Ten ACL. Or Sturgill Simpson.
Little Austin punk rock? Go for Ghetto Ghouls and Nameless Frames at Beerland.
An ATH approved show? How about Rose Selavy, Mean Jolene, and Shivery Shakes at Sahara Lounge.
And don’t forget the teen friendly, Stereogum approved 1975 show at Stubbs.
You could even double dip, hitting up Luna early, then catch one of these late shows.
In a week of great goings-on, you should be thrilled that brilliant pop music exists so abundantly in town. One of our favorites, Shivery Shakes, are about to hit the road and spread their gospel of surfy pop all over the States (the East Coast at least). So tonight, join them in celebration as they play one last local gig, try out some new tunes and melt your hearts. Plus, perennial ATH favorites She Sir will be opening, as well as the hot pop band in town, Roses (my old lady can’t stop talking about them).
Also…there’s a great pre-pop show bill featuring some really talented ladies (Aisha Burns, Molly Burch) going on at Cheer Ups earlier in the evening, so make it a night of great music and show up!
I’m a sucker for really well crafted pop rock, and I’m pretty sure that Cali’s Clean Spill fit that bill with this brand new single. It reminds me an awful lot of local Austin act Shivery Shakes, bordering the line between surf and indie, but always bringing hooks. There’s even solo that breaks down the track in the middle before the group comes in with some more swagger. If you’re looking for a track that makes you feel good just by listening, then I think you should hop on this one right away.
It’s Thursday night ya’ll…and that means, at least this time of year, time for you to get out and see a really great local show. Now, admittedly, two of the ATH Records bands, Rose Selavy and Shivery Shakes, are playing, but I’m not just pulling the homer card here. I really really enjoyed the Roses set on NYE this year. At times they had this indiepop feel, other times I felt a Kurt Vile vibe, both which I dig. Also, Typical Girls are making the drive in to bring their dreamy pop tracks to the stage as well. It sounds like a perfect night for all you pop fans; Doors are at 9 PM.
